Our client in the food industry in Mississauga, ON is looking for a Regulatory and Quality Assurance Specialist to join their growing team.The Regulatory and Quality Assurance Specialist will report directly to the Quality Assurance Manager. Your role will involve ensuring compliance with industry regulations and upholding high product quality standards. This includes reviewing and interpreting regulations, developing and implementing quality assurance procedures, conducting audits to identify improvement opportunities, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to sustain regulatory standards. Responsibilities
Develop and uphold compliance policies and procedures according to relevant laws, CFIA/FDA regulations, and industry standards.
Be knowledgeable about labeling requirements and regulations for Canada and the USA, and proficient in using Genesis and other regulatory portals.
Collaborate with offshore third-party contractors to provide labeling guidance for products imported to Canada and the USA.
Offer food safety and quality guidance to Production, R&D, Purchasing, Shipping & Receiving, Maintenance, Planning, Sanitation, and other departments.
Stay updated on regulatory changes and industry best practices to ensure ongoing compliance.
Ensure the implementation and maintenance of HACCP and food safety management systems.
Develop and manage incoming specifications and online profiling spreadsheets to track and analyze quality parameters.
Ensure compliance with CFIA, SQF, and customer requirements.
Assist with plant trials and contribute to building quality guidelines and production manuals.
Collaborate with the corporate team to develop and update SOPs and policies for optimizing quality, sanitation, operations, and other relevant departments.
Maintain accurate records and documentation related to compliance activities.
Serve as a backup, if needed, for:
Conducting pre-operational inspections, post-sanitation checks, and daily quality assurance verification tasks.
Providing Food Safety and GMP policy training to new hires.
Monitoring GMP compliance through inspections, swabbing, environmental monitoring, and coaching.
Maintain and manage plant sanitation records to monitor performance and improve practices.
Perform water and air testing, and determine action plans if deviations occur.
Oversee the Pest Control and Environmental Monitoring programs.
Regularly update and maintain food safety documentation.
Assist in preparing for food safety audits, including annual third-party GFSI audits, internal audits, customer second-party audits, and supplier audits.
Continuously review and update Food Safety training, delivering relevant training to ensure effective implementation of quality systems, HACCP, and Food Safety programs.
Ensure all training, SOPs, and record reviews are completed on schedule.
Identify gaps and opportunities for continuous improvement in best practices.
Perform other duties as assigned.Qualifications
Over 3 years of experience in regulatory compliance and quality assurance.
Strong passion for and understanding of changes to existing regulatory requirements.
Ability to understand and interpret regulations, ensuring product labels are compliant in the country of sale.
In-depth knowledge of relevant laws and regulations, including FDA and CFIA, with the capability to lead and communicate changes effectively to stakeholders.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with keen attention to detail.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
Ability to stay current on regulatory requirements and assess their impact on the organization.
Experience in conducting compliance risk assessments and implementing controls to mitigate identified risks.
Experience working with product development systems and Genesis (specifically).
Organized, with strong time management skills, and the ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
Adaptable and quick to learn in a fast-paced environment.Summary
