Education
- High School Diploma or GED required or
- the equivalent (GED). required and
- Completion of accredited program in Surgical Technology. required
- 1-2 years O.R. experience as surgical technologist in an acute care operating room, which included the major surgical specialties i.e. General, GYN, Urology, Neuro, Ortho, ENT, CV, plastic preferred
- CST - Certified Surgical Technologist preferred
- Knowledge of surgical specialties, instruments, techniques, procedures, anatomy and physiology.
- Scrub role competence.
- Must be able to understand the importance of being a member of a specialty team and rotating to other specialties to maintain skills.
- Ability to teach; adaptable to change.
- Good verbal and written communications skills.
- Ability to maintain emotional control and function under stress during emergent and non-emergent situations.
- Provides direct patient care in the scrub role and may assist the RN in performance of circulating duties as delegated.
- Collaborates with the Core Leader, OR in providing orientation to the scrub role for new staff regarding instrumentation, equipment, supplies, operative procedures and surgeon preference for an assigned surgical specialty.
- Maintains, evaluates, and revises instrument sets, surgical supplies and equipment, and initiates orders for repair or purchase of same in collaboration with Nurse Core Leader in assigned surgical specialty.
- Assures a safe environment for patients during intraoperative phase of surgical intervention.
- Assists with turnover of the OR suite.
- Contributes to the development and implementation of department and team goals and objectives.
- Contributes to the evaluation of new employees in orientation in the assigned surgical specialty.
- Participates in team and staff meetings and inservices and to keep staff updated regarding changes or innovations in the assigned specialty.
- Participates in unit/team quality assurance audits.
