Job DescriptionThe City of Raleigh Public Utilities Department, now also known as Raleigh Water, provides water and sanitary sewer services to about 198,000 metered customers and a service population of about 600,000 people in Raleigh, Garner, Wake Forest, Rolesville, Knightdale, Wendell, and Zebulon areas. Our mission is to provide safe, sustainable water services for our customers while protecting public health and contributing to the economic, environmental, and social vitality of our communities.Our Water Distribution division is looking for a Utilities Technician to join our team. Utility Technicians are devoted to completing preventive maintenance, utility repairs, utility locating, participating in investigations within our water system and providing excellent customer service. Utility Technician also performs maintenance and equipment operation for the City's distribution system by performing skilled activities in support of maintaining, replacing, and repairing water assets (i.e., services, mains, and fire hydrants, etc.).The benefits of being a Raleigh Water Utilities Technician:

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Locates Raleigh Water's water lines, sewer lines and the City of Raleigh fiber. Must have the ability to read maps, enter data, create work orders and respond to damages.
  • Depending on the workload, shifts may be required to be extended beyond the 40-hour work week.
  • Required to work after hours on an on-call rotating schedule. This may require working on a repair call crew when needed and performing emergency locates.
  • Must be able to be flexible to work in our Investigation Program when needed which would entail identifying missing data from maps, provides maps to update GIS, turns valves for shutdowns for projects and contractors, research pipe type and size, communicates with citizens and collects water samples, locates water lines and assets located in the water system, investigates system anomalies.
  • Performs semi-skilled or skilled general maintenance supporting City department(s) or maintenance function; selects proper maintenance tools and equipment for tasks; performs work following established safety policies and procedures and applicable codes and regulations.
Typical QualificationsEducation and Experience
High School Diploma or GED and one year of utilities experience or experience related to the fields listed below as shown:
  • Landscaping: installer, maintenance, irrigation
  • Construction: grading, storm drain, site work, builder, plumber, any utility construction (including fiber installation), road construction
  • Mechanic: heavy equipment, HVAC, hydraulic systems
  • Farming: manual labor, equipment operating
  • Moving Company: labor, truck driver
  • General Municipal Worker: utility inspector
  • Tech School Student: mechanical
  • Firefighter: full or part-time
ORAn equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.Licensing and Certifications:
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.
  • Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two years of utilities experience.
Additional InformationKnowledge and Skills:
  • Operating and driving heavy equipment such as a dump truck, tractor-trailer, tractor, flatbed truck or water truck.
  • Hauling materials, supplies, equipment, and soil.
  • Inspecting assigned equipment for mechanical readiness.
  • Performing minor preventative maintenance on equipment.
  • Proofreading and error correction.
  • Monitoring and maintaining required supplies, materials and inventory.
  • Performing basic math calculations.
  • Comprehending reference books and manuals.
  • Operating assigned tools and equipment.
  • Organizing and maintaining records and files.
  • Interpreting and applying applicable laws, codes, regulations and standards (based on assignment).
  • Providing customer service.
  • Must have the ability to operate assorted heavy equipment and the following tools and equipment: metro-tech, pipe-horn, sub-site, and valve box locator, computer and a variety of small hand/power tools.
  • Ability to run 3 to 4 man crew when the supervisor is absent.
