General SummaryUnder the general direction of the Chief of Otolaryngology, the clinical audiologist provides comprehensive diagnostic and rehabilitative services for patients with hearing complaints, hearing impairments and balance disorders. Services are provided on a primarily outpatient basis and may also be provided by consultation in the inpatient settings. Assists Otolaryngology leadership with the clinical operations, research and education functions of the department.Principal Duties and Responsibilities:Principle Responsibilities· Provides comprehensive range of primary clinical audiologic services to patients of all ages and developmental levels, including independent management of difficult and problem cases:o identification and diagnostic audiometry for description of hearing loss and diagnosis of diseases of the ear and central nervous systemo electrophysiologic evaluations (diagnostic and/ or threshold) of the auditory systemo electrophysiologic evaluations of the balance systemo communication needs assessmento rehabilitation for patients who use assistive hearing deviceso rehabilitation for patients who use air-conduction hearing aidso rehabilitation for patients who use bone-conduction hearing aidso rehabilitation for patients who use cochlear implantso referrals to appropriate professionalso intra-operative monitoring of cranial nerves· Interprets test results and service outcomes into oral and written clinical reports to provide professional recommendations· Completes documentation and billing for clinical procedures· Provides direct assistance to patients by helping them to move about in order to perform tests and rehabilitative services· Models and refines care to be aligned with best and evolving audiology practices· Advances and demonstrates knowledge, skill and understanding of audiology services· Models department policies and clinical protocols, including the Quality Assurance program· Provides leadership in training and mentorship of audiologists, medical staff, students and others· Seeks opportunities to provide internal and external education and professional staff development· Provides other clinic-related duties as assigned· Maintains appropriate professional credentials; stays current within the field and provides a record of relevant continuing educationSKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:· Experience in the use of the following equipment: diagnostic audiometer, middle ear analyzer, real ear equipment and hearing aid analyzer, dispensary modification tools, hearing aids, implantable hearing devices, and assistive listening devices, ABR software, VNG/VEMP equipment.· Experience performing site of lesion testing for balance disorders and ABR techniques, interpretation of Audiological test findings, comprehensive report writing and effective relating of diagnostic results and recommendations to patients and medical providers.· Knowledge of related current state and federal laws, regulations, and standards pertinent to Clinical Audiology and hearing aid dispensing.· Interpersonal skills required to work effectively with a diverse patient population and professionals and support staff.WORKING CONDITIONS:The Division of Otolaryngology is a busy hospital-based practice consisting of physicians, nursing staff, administrative support staff, and 9 audiologists across the main campus in the Longwood medical area and satellite office(s). The clinical audiologist works one on one with many patients of various age groups, education levels and competencies in a team setting.HOSPITAL WIDE RESPONSIBILITIES:QualificationsDoctoral degree with a major in Audiology. Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Note: new graduates must obtain their CCC’s within 3 months of their start date. Massachusetts license to practice Audiology. One year of professional full-time work experience (including traineeship), preferably in a hospital or medical private office setting. Experience with diagnostic audiologic testing of patients of all ages.
