DescriptionThe purpose of this classification is to perform responsible administrative, educational, and manual tasks in order to promote the conservation and understanding of the world's wildlife and natural resources by participating in a variety of educational programs, activities, special events, and outreach services.Examples of DutiesConducts educational programs for the zoo: develops, manages and conducts specific education programs for students, adults, and teachers; conducts teacher workshops to promote zoo education programs; develops and presents training sessions to zoo visitors; works with children and instructors during Summer Safari camp and at other functions.Guides group or individual tours of the zoo and its facilities: leads discussions regarding animal background, care and activities, environmental issues, and other topics of interest to the guests; shares information about zoo events and activities with visitors; serves as a technical resource to visitors.Supervises front-line education staff: assists in the supervision of zoo keepers, as related to the education department; trains and supervises volunteers in educational programming.Responsible for basic housekeeping of Education Building: sweeps, mops, vacuums, etc.; sets up/straightens furniture; orders and handles supplies for educational department; keeps building open/closes up on scheduled days.Serves as primary caretaker of education animals on scheduled days: performs duties associated with caring for education animals, such as cleaning cages, feeding, watering, etc.; handles a variety of small mammals, reptiles and birds for presentations.Operates a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data, utilizing Microsoft Word, Microsoft Publisher, Adobe Photoshop, Excel, Lotus Notes, presentation, Internet, e-mail, and/or other software; operates general office equipment, audio-visual equipment, educational tools and other supplies.Typical QualificationsHigh School diploma or GED, with two (2) years of college level work in Zoology, Biology, Education or related field; Bachelor's degree preferred; supplemented by two (2) years experience as a zoo docent or employee having worked specifically with wildlife education, as well as some teaching or training experience; or any combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess a valid driver's license.
