MedStar Health has an immediate opportunity for an experienced retail Pharmacist to join our team on a PRN basis. This position will primarily provide PRN support to our DC retail locations, but ideal candidates will also be licensed in Maryland and able to provide coverage as needed in that jurisdiction as well.Evaluates drugs prescribed by physicians for appropriateness of dose, therapeutic efficacy, allergy, drug interaction, and contraindications; processes prescriptions through insurance company and handles DUR rejects, pre-authorizations, etc.; performs final check on all prescriptions, ensuring accurate input, labeling, and dispensing; and, provides counseling and drug information to patients and physicians. Education
  • Licensed as a pharmacist in the District of Columbia (DC) required
Experience
  • 1-2 years Pharmacy experience, preferably in retail required
Licenses and Certifications
  • PHARMD - Licensed Pharmacist Current DC Pharmacist license, including Immunization/Vaccination Certification and registration with the board of pharmacy in that district required
  • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills preferred.
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Acts as the pharmacist in charge in the absence of the manager: directing workflow patterns, ensuring daily responsibilities are carried out by assigned staff, resolving issues requiring management intervention, and performing routine oversight of pharmacy operations.
  • Performs final check on all completed prescriptions, verifying the accuracy of input, labeling, and dispensing; makes corrections as necessary; maintains refill and narcotic logs, and prescription files.
  • Processes prescriptions in the dispensing system; evaluates prescriptions for appropriateness of dose, therapeutic efficacy, allergy, drug interactions, and contraindications; handles DURs, rejects, preauthorizations, etc.; communicates with third party payors to troubleshoot issues relating to coverage, reimbursement, etc.
  • Provides clinical information and guidance to physicians and allied health professionals as appropriate to provide safe, prompt, and accurate dispensing of all prescriptions; calls physicians and follows up on refill requests; notifies physicians of Rx's requiring pre-authorizations and discusses alternatives as appropriate.
  • Provides patient counseling as appropriate on a patient-by-patient basis.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts. Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
