  • Performs infection surveillance on a routine basis, as well as on focused units, reporting findings and recommendations.
  • Reviews the following on a daily basis to identify any potential infections: Culture reports from microbiology, Positive HbsAg report, Admissions list, Emergency room log
  • Prepares data and reviews with the Chief of Infectious Diseases: Prepares worksheets on any suspected or confirmed infections, Reviews medical record and interviews care givers to obtain additional information on each patient.
  • Maintains the infection control database, inputting information, updating when additional information is obtained, and retrieving information.
  • Establishes a mechanism to verify the accuracy of the data, and report verified data.
  • Serves and communicates with NHSN as necessary to remain current on the system. Attends training sessions as needed.
  • Assists the Senior Nurse Epidemiologist to prepare line listings at least monthly to identify trends and patterns
  • Assists the Senior Nurse Epidemiologist to prepare monthly report for Infections Committee, reporting findings of regular surveillance, as well as potential and actual problems.
  • Assists in the Preparation of reports as requested by other departments.
  • Report STDs and TB cases and all other reportable infectious diseases to Health Department as required by law either by telephone or in writing.
  • Monitors departmental accreditation and licensure activities related to infection control.
  • Reports Health-Care associated (HAI) infections which have a compensable result of Risk Management.
  • Determines proper placement of patients.
  • Provides consultation to departments in matters related to aseptic technique, sterilization, disinfections, isolation precautions technique, patient placement and biohazardous waste disposal.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities by identifying opportunities for improvement and serving on at least one performance improvement team.
  • Participates in the development, review, and implementation of infection control policies and procedures. Educates new policies as needed.
  • Assist in reviewing all department specific infection control policies and procedures yearly and recommends and assures implementation of changes.
  • Monitors local, state, and national regulations relative to infection control issues and alerts chairman of Infections Committee when policies and procedures must be written or changed to address these regulations.
  • Participates in patient care conferences as they refer to infection control issues.
  • Coordinates and participates in the ongoing in-service education of hospital personnel, patients/families and others in relation to infection control.
  • Demonstrates and teaches techniques, interprets reports, discusses communicable disease transmission, diagnoses and treatment with hospital staff, physicians, patients and families.
  • Maintains professional competence through participation in continuing education and other learning experiences, remaining informed of current trends in hospital infection prevention and control.
  • Serves as a role model, participating in professional organizations and community activities.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of regulatory standards (TJC, CMS, AHCA), for Infection Control related topics.
Qualifications:
  • Current licensure in the State of Florida. CPR and Certification in Infection Control preferred.
  • Bachelors Degree preferred.
  • Minimum three years of clinical experience. Infection control experience preferred.
