Pest Program employees conduct surveys for northern giant hornet, Japanese beetle, spongy moth, apple maggot, Phytophthora ramorum, Spartina and other invasive insect pests, diseases, and noxious weeds. Some employees work in the Plant Pest and Molecular Diagnostics Lab, or the Entomology labs in Olympia or Yakima to provide diagnostics of survey samples. Others assist with control and eradication efforts for northern, giant hornet, Japanese beetle, spongy moth, invasive snails, Spartina and knotweed. Regardless of the threat, Pest program employees use cutting edge technology, scientific processes, and teamwork to protect some of Washington's most valuable agricultural crops.The Japanese Beetle Trapper 's primary role is to protect the state's natural resources by preventing the establishment of the high-risk invasive Japanese Beetle. Under the supervision of the Pest Biologist 2 trappers conduct assigned aspects of invasive species surveys and eradication projects.Please note that the schedule for this non-permanent field-based role is 4 days a week, 10 hours a day, Monday through Thursday. The trapping season begins May 15th.Position and Salary InformationWSDA is recruiting for four (4) seasonal non-permanent Japanese Beetle Trappers positions within the Pest Program. These positions are approved for home duty stations located in Clark, Snohomish, and Yakima, WA counties. Occasional overtime and/or travel may be required and these positions are represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE).The base pay offered will take into account internal equity and may vary depending on the preferred candidate's job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The typical starting salary range for this position is: $ 16.52 - $ 19.85 hourly.Employee Benefits

  • Respond to urgent invasive species introductions and participate in immediate containment operations as directed.
  • Participate as directed in Japanese beetle or other invasive species projects.
  • Conduct surveillance and monitoring surveys for Japanese Beetle and other invasive pests with potential regulatory implications.
  • Communicate with internal and external stakeholders
  • Effective use of technology to efficiently and accurately complete daily tasks
QualificationsRequired Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • One year experience in survey, eradication, research or environmental biology.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • CPR/First aid certification or the ability to obtain certification prior to the start of the active survey season.
  • Two years experience in detection, survey, control or eradication of pest or invasive species; supervisory or management experience can substitute for one year of survey experience.
  • Education involving major study in biological science or closely related field.
  • Familiar with the Spanish language.
