Let your career find its purpose here at Carondelet.Surgical Tech II Full Time Days Position SummaryAssists the surgical team to provide patient care for assigned patients under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse. Demonstrates increasing knowledge of physical and technical requirements of surgical intervention: Moderately complex procedures, advancing knowledge of instrumentation - specialty sets. Demonstrates increasing knowledge of anatomy and physiology. Ability to scrub more than one specialty proficiently. Willingness to assist circulator. Responsible for maintaining effective communication skills. Participates in monitoring and maintaining resources in specific department. Understands and contributes to the vision/mission and goals of the department. Works in a secure department with access to areas where medications are stored. Handles and labels medications on the sterile field under the direct supervision of licensed personnel.ResponsibilitiesParticipate in “time-out” and follows Universal Protocol Policy.Place equipment and supplies in the operating room and arranges instruments according to preference cards.Hand instruments and supplies to surgeon, holds retractors, cuts sutures, and performs other technical tasks as directed by surgeon during operation.Identify problems/concerns on the nursing unit and assists in developing resolutions in a positive, constructive manner.Make a positive contribution to the morale of the unit/section/department.Participate in performance improvement teams/activities.Demonstrate ability to provide appropriate care to patients of all ages.Anticipate supplies and equipment needed by utilizing surgeon's preference card.Understand and demonstrate principles of asepsis.Use sterile technique when opening supplies and throughout procedure.Review anatomy and physiology involved.Review operation of needed equipment for procedures.Assist with proper positioning of patient.Demonstrate Intra-operative knowledge and ability.Keep accurate count of needles, sharps, and instruments according to policy.Use proper technique for scrubbing, gowning, gloving, and draping.Review operation of equipment and supplies as personal needs dictate to remain current in ability to use and operate equipment and supplies.Avoid unnecessary conversation during procedure.Organize in preparation for end of case and assists in clean up and turnover of rooms. Dispose of all sharps, biohazardous waste items appropriately. Handle specimens properly.Demonstrate knowledge of principles and proper use of various sterilization types and document cycles appropriately.Report equipment malfunctions to manager.Use time management and flexibility in organizing and prioritizing workload to provide optimal service to the department and the network.Level 2 - ProficientParticipate in hospital safety and emergent programs.Guide the practice of support staff to achieve the patient's functional goals.Level 3 - Subject Matter ExpertParticipate in performance improvement teams/activities and quality improvement measures within the department.Serve as a preceptor/mentor for students and staff, as appropriate.Act as a resource to promote occupational therapy within Carondelet.Cooperate with faculty of affiliated schools or health programs to assist in providing an optimum learning environment and experience for students in the department.SURGICAL TECH II FULL TIME DAYS CANDIDATE WILL POSSESS THE FOLLOWING EDUCATION, LICENSE/CERTIFICATIONS, AND EXPERIENCEEDUCATIONRequired: High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (G.E.D.)CertificatesRequired: Current CPR - AHA BLS requiredPreferred: Successful completion of Surgical Technologists course from an accredited facility.WORK EXPERIENCERequired: Minimum of one year experience.Preferred: Knowledge of hospital environment desired. Previous hospital and/or health care related experience preferred.SkillsRequired: Must possess effective interpersonal skills, team building, problem solving, critical thinking, coaching and mentoring.KnowledgeRequired: Principles of asepsisOtherPreferred: Must be able to work variable shifts, holidays and/or weekends. Must be able to take call rotation when required. Must be able to perform all duties, including lifting and transferring, using proper body mechanics.#LI-AS1Responsibilities:The Surgical Technologist is responsible for aseptic technique, setting up the required equipment, instrumentation and sterile supplies as needed for their assigned cases; scrubbing and passing instruments and equipment during surgical procedures; pulling cases as needed, breaking down cases at the end of the procedure, sets up operating room and supplies needed for day/following day's schedule. Available for call on an assigned scheduled basis as required by unit need. When need arises, will perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.Qualifications:Education:Required: Graduate of surgical technology program as required by state regulation of practice or policy.Experience:Preferred: 1 year experience as a surgical technologist.Certifications:Required: BLS.
