  • Job Summary
  • Responsible for performing supporting tasks related to histology, morgue and laboratory procedures:
  • Maintain a general knowledge of policies and practices.
  • Provide support to multiple areas by processing, glassware, setting up cultures, accessioning, clerical or other duties as determined by supervisor with maintained competency.
  • Answer histology phone and assist with customer service.
  • Coordinate information between laboratory technicians, Pathologists' Assistant and Pathologists, Accession surgical pathology cases
  • Responsible for contacting ordering physician to obtain or correct patient/specimen information
  • Adheres to department standards for patient identification and specimen integrity
  • Resolve and document any problem specimens prior to grossing
  • Uses computer system for inquiries and information gathering or clarification, timing in specimens and accessioning,
  • Deliver completed cases to pathologists
  • Assist with COG and other research requests by reaching out to pathologist to identify appropriate samples, preparing material per pathologist request, and compiling cases for pickup
  • Assist with pathology send-out orders by completing common requisition forms and preparing material for send-out per pathologist direction,
  • Assist with filing of slides and blocks
  • Pull slides and blocks as needed for ancillary testing.
  • Performing Gross room duties:
  • Prepare fresh solutions, stains and/or reagents for the frozen section line
  • Maintain and keep grossing area properly supplied and clean.
  • Assist with the morgue duties.
  • Act as a scribe for autopsy cases when other work allows
  • Assist with pathology image management (uploading files to the network, labeling files, etc.) and help with future imaging management needs (uploading images to an online database and labeling cases, whole slide scanning, etc)
  • Other histology, laboratory and/or pathology clerical tasks as requested
  • Performs all other related duties as requested.
  • Education
  • High School diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts preferred
  • Minimum of one year college required
  • Experience
  • Licensures, Certifications, and/or Registries
