General Definition of WorkPerforms protective service work receiving and processing inmates into the facility, maintaining facility security, processing inmates for transportation to court, medical and related facilities, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Detention Officer/Shift Leader.To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to complete the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.   • Receives and processes inmates into custody of institution; searches prisoners; takes charge of personal property; provides inmates opportunity to call attorney or relative; advises inmates on institutional rules and regulations.
  • Patrols jail area periodically to ensure security and maintain order; performs head count and verifies inmates for positive identification as required.
  • Prepares inmates for transportation to medical, court and related facilities.
  • Supervises inmates during meals, personal hygiene, and related activities for conformance to institutional rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Dispenses personal and cell cleaning equipment; keeps record of money received from inmates.
  • Distributes medication to inmates as prescribed or directed; provides basic and emergency first aid as required.
  • Prepares routine records on inmates; performs general clerical duties.
  • Records visits; ensures the safety and security of visitors; inspects items brought into the jail; checks incoming and outgoing mail.
  • Conducts security checks and shakedowns of cells as required and inventories any confiscated contraband.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education & ExperienceSome knowledge of the security, rules, regulations and procedures of the institution; some knowledge of the practices of modern penology as related to the supervision and care of persons under institutionalized restraint; ability to enforce institutional rules firmly and fairly; ability to detect potential behavior problems of inmates; ability to detect the early symptoms of common health problems; ability to carry out oral and written directions accurately; ability to supervise the activities of large groups of inmates; ability to prepare records and reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.Possession of or ability to obtain Basic Detention Officer certification within one year of employment. Must meet and maintain minimum qualifications for the position established by the department and the State of North Carolina.Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina.This position is a safety sensitive position and subject to random substance abuse testing in accordance with the Pender County Personnel Policy and Risk Policy.Physical RequirementsThis work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
