The GNRP will begin in August 2024. Previous participants have had the opportunity to participate in the Emergency Department (ED), Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) track for 6 months.Emergency Department:The Emergency Department is a fast-paced environment where nurses care for patients of all ages from neonates to geriatrics. Nurses must be able to think quickly, multitask, and be able to pivot quickly to the next task since every day is different. Our staff care for trauma patients, life threatening illnesses, such as STEMIs and Strokes, as well as minor illnesses and psychiatric patients. There is a tremendous amount of teamwork and is a great learning environment since the nursing staff works alongside providers and specialists as well as many experienced nurses. The HHED sees about 200 patients a day and the department has many roles to support patient care including RNs, LPNs, Patient Care Technicians, Psych RNs, and Psychiatric Technicians. With the addition of a new Children's unit at Harrisburg Hospital, there are opportunities to champion pediatric nursing and help develop protocols for our youngest patients. The HHED nurses have several active committees, including practice, education, pride, and quality.MSICU:The MSICU RN's, LPN's and PCT's are a great team! They work very hard every day to provide high quality care to our patients. We function as part of a multi-disciplinary team with our physicians, pharmacists, dieticians, and therapists. We are looking for future nurses who are willing to bring a positive attitude and work hard with us in providing outstanding care to our patients. Our patient population is made up mostly of medical patients and diagnosis are vast. We care for patients requiring ECMO and CRRT, post-partum hemorrhage, stroke, sepsis, etc. Our surgical population is smaller but tends to be made up of patients who have a lot of comorbidities and are high risks for procedures. Neurosurgery, renal transplant, and complicated ENT surgery patients are a few who we see on a regular basis. We are also the COVID ICU at this site.CTICU:The CTICU is a 19 bed Cardiac unit which primarily cares for cardiac surgery open heart patients immediate post-op, we also care for acutely ill cardiac patients such as MI, Cardiogenic Shock, those needing devices such as Intra-aortic balloon pump, Impella, and ECMO. We care for acutely ill vascular patients requiring surgery and care for them immediate post-op to include those needing Thoracic drains and EKOS. We care for stroke patients, post cardiac arrest (to include hypothermia protocol), minimally invasive cardiac procedure patients, and renal disease patients to include those needing CRRT. We also care for medically ill patients such as septic shock, acute exacerbation of CHF, and other disease processes requiring ICU critical care. It is a fast-paced environment with little downtime. The average stay for many of our cardiac and thoracic patients is 24-72 hours. The medical patients stay longer with an average of 10-18 days depending on severity of illness and if there are beds available on N10 or M10 where most medical patients from our unit are transferred. All cardiac, thoracic, and vascular patients are usually transferred to M6 or discharged to home from the unit. Why Join the Graduate Nurse Rotational Program?· Opportunity to explore and find your right 'home' in nursing at UPMC· Fantastic opportunity to learn from many talented nurses and receive a broad education in nursing· Having a resource pool nurse as a mentor· Having preceptors for each “rotation”What can you Expect as a GNRP Professional Staff Nurse? The Professional Staff Nurse provides highly competent patient care and treatment while demonstrating empathy and a passion for learning.
