Employment is based on a person’s professional qualifications and competence.Your Role:This position is based out of San Luis Obispo, California.The Peer Advisor supports education abroad efforts at Cal Poly by helping students explore study and internship opportunities abroad. In collaboration with Cal Poly International Center (CPIC) and CEA CAPA, the Peer Advisor will support CPIC student advising, complete outreach across campus, and serve as a resource for students seeking information on education abroad, particularly those interested in CEA CAPA programs. This position provides valuable experience in advising, leadership, communication, marketing, public speaking, and student affairs.What You’ll Do:OUTREACH (20%)
  • Attend study abroad fairs, host info sessions, and coordinate education abroad outreach in collaboration with CPIC.
  • Develop targeted outreach for underrepresented populations to expand access to education abroad.
  • In collaboration with CPIC staff and CEA CAPA Alumni Ambassadors, coordinate additional outreach to generate awareness of CEA CAPA program opportunities
ADVISING (60%)
  • Conduct general advising sessions, one-on-one and in small groups, for students interested in any of Cal Poly’s approved study abroad/away programs.
  • Answer questions and provide guidance to all students, in particular those specifically interested in approved CEA CAPA program offerings with an emphasis on connecting students with best-fit programs.
  • Provide pre-departure support to students studying abroad/away on Cal Poly-approved programs, including CEA CAPA programs.
TRAINING & COLLABORATION (20%)
  • Participate in trainings, professional development, and check-in meetings with both CPIC and CEA CAPA.
  • Report to both CPIC and CEA CAPA on outreach and advising efforts.
  • Collaborate with CPIC to build knowledge on campus policies, practices, and program opportunities.
What Makes a Great Candidate:
  • Current student enrolled in a degree program at Cal Poly who has participated in a CEA CAPA program.
  • Available to work 8 hours per week, with occasional evening and weekend availability.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with multiple stakeholders.
  • Passion for working with students from diverse backgrounds and promoting study abroad opportunities.
Additional Desirable Skills: * Confidence in public speaking and delivering presentations.
  • Familiarity with Mines education abroad resources and policies.
Hours:This is a part-time position paying $16-$18/hr (contingent on current CA minimum wage). Standard work schedule is approx. 8-10 hrs/wk from September 2024-June 2025.We believe great talent comes in many forms and that there is no one size fits all in hiring.
