DescriptionESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Supports configuration, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of coordinated traffic signal timing throughout Jefferson County
Provides management, support, and maintenance of traffic simulation tools (Synchro and TransModeler)
Oversees and executes the engineering functions of design, construction, testing and implementation of Traffic Engineering and Transportation related projects
Creates, reviews, and monitors engineering plans, specifications, and contractsExamples of DutiesUNDER ADMINISTRATIVE SUPERVISION
Manages agency-developed traffic simulation files (Synchro, TransModeler) by updating various corridor/area signal systems with new vehicular turning movement counts and traffic signal timing
Executes internal traffic signal retiming projects (corridor and network level) for coordinated signal timing systems at the discretion of division management
Provides technical support to Electrical Maintenance staff to troubleshoot malfunctioning electrical traffic control devices, ITS communications, and vehicle detection equipment
Evaluates concerns pertaining to traffic signal operations issues, coordinating work with Electrical Maintenance, and providing feedback to citizens, colleagues, and elected officials
Performs engineering studies pertaining to the modification and/or upgrade of infrastructure at existing signalized intersections (pedestrian accommodations, left-turn phasing, right-turn overlaps, etc.) for internal review
Reviews plans and specifications for transportation projects
Investigates, reviews, and recommends solutions to traffic concerns
Provides guidance and expert technical advice to transportation and planning teams on traffic standards, process, and policy
Represents division at various meetings, either internal or public facing

Three years of traffic engineering experienceEQUIVALENCY
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substitutedOTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Must wear safety equipment as mandated by OSHA
Must be an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) and be eligible to apply and take the Professional Engineer (PE) exam in the state of Kentucky
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's licenseSPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must apply and take the Professional Engineer (PE) exam on the first scheduled date following hire into the classification
If Professional Engineer (PE) exam is not passed on first attempt must reapply and test on the next scheduled exam date following receipt of resultsPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Meets regular and punctual attendance standards and any special needs of the position as determined by management, including mandatory overtime and performing related work
Communicates with individuals in person and utilizes all types of communication media
Spends prolonged periods of time sitting, standing, walking, carrying, stooping and climbing
Works at locations with limited or difficult access including uneven terrain
