This position is located in Bangui, within the Aviation Section of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).ResponsibilitiesWithin the limits of delegated authority, the Air Operations Assistant (Meteorology) will perform the following duties: •Provides required and timely weather information and weather forecast METAR, SPECI and current weather for MINUSCA Air Operations and the air crews. •Check weather information every one hour and communicate to duty officer or flight followers for Flights. •Monitor continuously and provide weather forecasts to the MAOC Planning Officer 24 hours in advance for flight planning. •Assist the Meteorological officer to prepare operational aviation meteorological information, reports and forecasts developed by international weather centers in accordance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) annex 4 (aeronautical Charts) and the international requirements stipulated by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). •Communicate meteorological observation and forecast of the mission area to stakeholders every 1 hour. •Disseminate the daily weather forecasts and meteorological briefing notes by email to all air carriers' Site Managers, MAOC Duty officer, and all other stakeholders by 14:30 PM daily. •Closely monitor the published and amended flight schedules of the day and advice as needed. •Present or provide weather briefing to Mission air operations and crew before the flight. Receive PIREPS (Pilot report) for enroute weather and analyse for dissemination to others. •Archive documented meteorological systems and where necessary, retrieve these data in support of special investigations and enquiries. •Draft SOW/SOR for the procurement of meteorological equipment or services for the Mission. •Participate in the drafting or review of Mission aviation SOPs and Sectors Aviation SOPs. •Train the staff at the various locations to operate the weather equipment where they are installed. •Install weather equipment and ensure installed weather equipment are operational within the mission area. •Review plans and assist in meteorological training programs for Aviation and MOVCON liaison officers, air crews and Mission aviation personnel.CompetenciesProfessionalism:Shows pride in work and in achievements. Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.EducationHigh school diploma or equivalent is required.Job - Specific QualificationTechnical or vocational certificate in Meteorology or graduation from an accredited WMO institution is required.Work ExperienceA minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in Aeronautical Meteorology and weather forecasting is required. The number of relevant work experience is reduced to 3 for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher.LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages for the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in French required.
