Bay of Islands Hospital (1.0FTE permanent, full time)The Bay of Islands Hospital, situated in Kawakawa, provides health care services for the wider Mid-North region of Northland. The BOI hospital has a busy A&E department, a 22 bed general ward, a maternity unit, a renal dialysis department and several outpatient clinics. The hospital is undergoing redevelopment to expand our services in order to keep up with the population growth in our region.Laboratory services in Northland provides both hospital and some community testing with a focus on the best outcome for our patients. There are 4 laboratories operating under one service, with the main laboratory at Whangarei Hospital supporting the 3 smaller regional hospital laboratories in Bay of Islands, Kaitaia and Dargaville.Recent growth leaves us looking for a Medical Laboratory Scientist to join our existing team at the Bay of Islands Hospital Laboratory.The position is a multidisciplinary role including Biochemistry, Haematology, Blood bank and limited Microbiology.Responsibilities include;
  • The usual tasks expected of a MLS including collection/ phlebotomy, registration, processing and reporting of all specimens, including those referred to other laboratories.
  • Participation in the 24/7 roster including day, evening and weekend shifts plus on call overnight.
  • Other technical and operational duties such as those involving quality and safety for the efficient and effective operations of the laboratory service.
Key Requirements:
  • NZ registered with the Medical Sciences Board of New Zealand without restriction (with a current annual practicing certificate)
  • Have a good understanding of medical laboratory operations, with good analytical skills. (Multi-disciplinary skills are an advantage, but training will be provided)
  • Have the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a close-knit team.
