They're specifically responsible for the region's natural environment; including flood protection, biosecurity, provision of regional parks, public transport planning and funding, and partnering for climate change resilience.Within the council, Te Hunga Whiriwhiri rōpū embrace their privileged role upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the values of the partnership between GWRC and mana whenua in the region. They provide support and advice on governance relationships, strategic and operational leadership, policy and planning which unlocks the potential of Māori communities, effective communication and engagement with Māori and leadership on te reo, tikanga and mātauranga Māori.Mō te Tūranga | About the Role:The Aporei Māori, Principal Advisor Māori plays a pivotal role in policy analysis, strategic advice, and research for the leadership team. You'll provide expert guidance on how GWRC upholds the Treaty of Waitangi principles and fosters Māori participation in decision-making processes. As the primary Māori policy advisor, you'll lead cross-departmental projects, shape organisational narratives, and provide coaching across the organisation.Reporting directly to Te Pou Whakarae, the Aporei Māori cultivates relationships with mana whenua and Māori community leaders, influencing governance arrangements and advancing shared priorities. Your responsibilities include leading policy development, understanding past, present and upcoming relevant legislation, maintaining information resources, and providing expert advice on Māori policy matters. Additionally, you'll lead GWRC's involvement in Treaty settlement negotiations and oversee their implementation.Mōu | About You:You'll have a deep understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi principles and tikanga Māori, particularly kaitiakitanga and the management of natural resources and the Resource Management Act and the Local Government Act. Sound knowledge of local government processes, strategic acumen and political savvy are essential in navigating the sometimes ambiguous and politically complex environment.With at least 10 years' of senior level leadership experience, you'll demonstrate expertise in providing advice, influencing stakeholders, and engaging leaders from governance tables to marae.
