- High School education or equivalent.
- Previous unit clerk experience preferred.
- Knowledge of basic medical terminology, proper grammar, and spelling.
- Basic office equipment knowledge.
- Medical terminology and/or medical experience preferred.
- Professional customer service skills.
- Basic computer skills required.
- Basic arithmetic skills.
- Good organizational and multi-tasking skills.
- Ability to read and communicate in English, bilingual abilities preferred.
- Gathers all pertinent demographic and billing information in a timely manner according to all state and federal regulations.
- Possess the knowledge of current policies and procedures.
- Ability to communicate all pertinent questions and answers related to the registration process.
- Maintains up-to-date and accurate documentation to ensure the integration of information for use by the healthcare team to ensure quality care.
- Facilitates the proper documentation of the patient care system from pre-admission through discharge.
- Scans all documents in a timely manner, as per medical records protocols.
- Maintains computer skills needed for registering, verifying and authorizing patient accounts.
- Understands all registration processes and maintains current skills.
- Maintains accurate computer records.
- Reviews the department's record keeping system and recommends changes and/or updates as needed.
- Demonstrates good arithmetic skills.
- Understands and follows accounting procedures.
- Answers and directs phone calls in a professional manner in regards to transferring of calls, taking messages, or follow up and returning calls.
- Demonstrates professional phone etiquette.
- Uses good organizational and multi-tasking skills.
- Schedule all new and existing patient visits.
- Provide assistance in preparing the patient for their next visit.
- Mail out any necessary forms to patient's home prior to visit.
- Make patient reminder calls when appropriate.
- Work with RN’s and APN’s to create an efficient and effective schedule.
- Serve as an ambassador to patients.
- Works with physicians to ensure all encounter forms are completed at time of service and coding is accurate and representative of the patient visit.
- Schedule follow up appointment.
- Obtain necessary authorizations from insurance companies for procedures and tests performed in office and to outside vendors and physicians.
- Send necessary records to outside vendors and physicians to facilitate referral.
- Schedule referral when appropriate and notify patient.
- Keep accurate logs of referrals made.
