This is a part-time less than 20-hours a week non-benefited opportunity.To apply, complete a brief application to upload a resume and a cover letter indicating your current schedule availability and which fitness classes you are interested in teaching.This position implements and teaches fitness classes at City of Oak Harbor facilities, primarily The Center in Oak Harbor, as well as other City parks and facilities. The position is within the Parks and Recreation Department and works under the direction of the Senior Services Administrator.We are looking for several individuals qualified to teach a variety of fitness classes including Tai Chi, EnhanceFitness and Line Dancing. The position is 3-5 hours a week with a maximum of 10 hours, depending on the amount of classes being taught. Our current fitness classes are taught by excellent instructors and are very well attended. We are looking for instructors to add more classes as well as substitute for existing classes as needed. Classes are currently held weekday mornings from 8:45-9:45AM and 10:00-11:00 AM. Additional afternoon classes will be taught weekdays from 2:30-3:30PM with the possibility of additional afternoon and evening options. We are looking for instructors with availability during any of those times.If you are a certified group fitness instructor, personal trainer, or have a background in exercise science or physiology (such as physical therapy or physical education) and are looking to teach and/or sub a couple classes a week we want to hear from you! We are willing to work with qualified candidates on additional certifications specific to the classes we host.Essential Job FunctionsWork activities involve multiple skills and may include, but are not limited to, any or all of the following depending on area of assignment, center needs, emergency services, special projects, and seasonal factors:
  • Prepare for and instruct fitness classes in a group setting allowing for different levels of fitness among students.
  • Start fitness classes promptly at the scheduled time.
  • Conduct accurate attendance for each class and routine fitness checks per program protocol.
  • Provide instruction to participants in person and virtually simultaneously.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the associated fitness equipment, such as hand and ankle weights, chairs, and general area.
  • Observe participants in a group setting where fitness and abilities vary informing them of corrective measures necessary for skill improvement and proper form.
  • Instruct participants in maintaining exertion levels to maximize benefits from effective and SAFE exercise routines.
  • Participate in discussions and development of fitness programs.
  • Establish and maintain an environment of teamwork.
  • Promote personal goal attainment for participants.
  • Handle sensitive information appropriately.
  • Perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.
  • Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, City officials, other city departments and the general public using good judgment, tact and courtesy.
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within area of responsibility. Direct inquiries to other department personnel as appropriate.

Qualifications & Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Minimum age of 18 years.
  • Valid CPR/AED and First Aid certification prior to independent fitness class instruction.
  • Hold a foundational fitness certification such as Group Exercise Instructor or Personal Trainer, or a background in exercise science or physiology (such as nursing, occupational therapy, or physical education).
  • Have, or successfully complete within six weeks of hire, required class certifications specific to the class being taught. This includes but is not limited to Enhanced Fitness Instructor and/or Tai Chi training and certification.
  • Computer operation skills and experience including Microsoft Office applications preferred.
  • Valid driver's license or otherwise establish the ability to perform the job in an equally efficient manner without driving. Provide drivers abstract with satisfactory driving record.
  • Must successfully pass a comprehensive background check to work with vulnerable populations, and as applicable, to include a financial credit check.
  • Required to work when classes are scheduled including early mornings, afternoons and possible evenings and weekends.

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.Work is normally performed in an indoor environment and may be performed outdoors in City parks, subject to noise and frequent interruptions. Equipment utilized includes weights, exercise, and stereo equipment. Work may be performed on weekends and/or evenings as scheduled.Physical Traits:

  • Frequently use your abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of the body repeatedly or continuously over time without "giving out" or fatiguing.

  • Frequently lift, push, pull and carry objects before, during and after classes.
