Position SummaryThe University of New Mexico Prevention Research Center (UNM PRC) seeks a HS Associate Scientist I to implement health education and evaluation activities for the Child Health Initiative for Lifelong Eating and Exercise (CHILE Plus). CHILE Plus program is the dissemination of the original CHILE intervention, which continues as an evidence-based, multidisciplinary nutrition education and obesity prevention program among Native American and Hispanic children enrolled in Head Start programs across rural New Mexico. Funded by the New Mexico Human Services Department as a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) project, CHILE Plus is aiming to help Head Start children and families eat more healthy food as well as participate in more physical activity.Under supervision of CHILE Plus director, the successful candidate is expected to plan, implement, deliver, and evaluate health education activities including, but not limited to professional development training programs, workshops, conferences, and other associated activities for individual, group, and/or community needs.Duties and Responsibilities * Plan, develop, and design health education and training programs in pediatric nutrition and physical activity
  • Conduct health education research on relevant topics, and design nutrition/physical activity curriculum modules
  • Evaluate implementation of community-engaged quantitative and qualitative research projects
  • Conduct descriptive quantitative and/or qualitative data analysis using SAS, Stata, R, SPSS or similar for quantitative analysis and NVivo for qualitative data analysis
  • Draft conference abstracts and/or grant proposals and seek funding for programs, as well as present health education and training programs to communities/groups/individuals
  • Establish and implement research protocols and procedures including contributing to submissions of research studies to the Human Research Protections Office
  • Travel to partner communities as necessary for project activities and engages with community partners involved in research studies and evaluation projects
  • Provides guidance to students regarding data collection and data entry for community-engaged research projects
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Conditions of Employment
  • For individual positions in which driving is a job requirement, a valid NM driver's license and valid UNM driver's permit will be required.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
Minimum QualificationsBachelor's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Educational background and expertise in Public Health, Community Health/Nutrition, Health Education and Promotion.
  • Experience working with underserved populations.
  • Experience working with school teachers and staff.
  • Knowledge of health education programs, policies and trends.
  • Knowledge of federal, state and/or community funding sources and mechanisms.
  • Knowledge of health education theory and practice.
  • Skill in organizing resources, establishing priorities, and working efficiently.
  • Ability to develop and deliver presentations.
  • Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials.
  • Ability to develop and present educational programs and/or workshops orally and/or in a variety of formats.
  • Ability to plan, assess, and evaluate programs.
  • Ability to conduct literature searches.
  • Ability to travel on occasion outside the metropolitan and rural areas.
