This is a part-time coaching position for someone with a background in some aspect of law, legal work, including law enforcement, and/or previous experience with Mock Trial or other similar programming. The successful candidate will provide support to the Mock Trial Head Coach by assisting with student supervision and organization for co-curricular, after school Mock Trial competitions during the season in accordance with the YMCA of Greater Seattle District and State policies and regulations. The AMHS Mock Trial team participates in jamboree, inter-squad competitions, etc. in preparation for the February and March district and state competitions. This position reports to the Mock Trial Head Coach, under the supervision of the Dean of Students and Principal. We are seeking an Assistant Coach, who is passionate about working with high school student and enthusiastic about the Mock Trial program.Qualifications:
  • Ability to work with teenagers as a coach/mentor is essential.
  • Ability to create a positive, cohesive team dynamic is as important as legal knowledge.
  • Qualified applicants will most likely have some legal background and/or previous experience coaching Mock Trial or similar activities.
Preferred:
  • Knowledge of Mock Trial, including the following Mock Trial elements: scope & sequence, timelines, good/bad facts, objections, rules of evidence, opening and closings, pre-trial motions, etc.
  • BA or higher in a related field.
  • Secondary teaching experience and current Washington State Teaching certificate and/or a law degree is preferred but not required for this role.
Compensation: This position is not eligible for benefits.   • Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Archbishop Murphy High School Mock Trial Team and serve as the primary head coach to the team.
  • Oversee all aspects of the Mock Trial including the education and instruction of students to learn and compete to the highest standards.
  • Work closely with the Mock Trial Booster Club for fundraising.
  • Coordinate with the departments at AMHS regarding administrative aspects of the program.
  • The team meets weekly in the fall to coordinate off-season trainings and practices. Practices vary based on the activities needed to ensure preparedness for all upcoming in/off-season scrimmages.
  • Supervise the team at all times during practices and events. Organize team tryouts, plan practices, develop teams, organize case etc.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents/guardians, and AMHS faculty / staff.
  • Coordinate field trips / team travel with school administration.
  • Responsible for program fundraising, registering with YMCA, and organizing banquet, awards and new family dinner.
  • Must enjoy working with high school students and be committed to helping students learn.
