Position DescriptionUnder general supervision by the IS Manager, the Desktop Technician Intern will provide technical support for hardware and multiple software platforms. The Desktop Technician Intern will image workstations, laptops and tablets via standard imaging process, install required software and install imaged device for our customers. Other duties include but are not limited to installing and troubleshooting printers, monitors, peripheral devices and software applications. The Desktop Technician Intern must use critical reasoning based on training, education and/or experience to produce alternatives to user needs which fall within established acceptable standards.Primary ResponsibilitiesThe Desktop Technician Intern is an entry-level position with limited responsibility in providing information and guidance to other team members. Desktop Technician Intern's time is spent between resolving user technical questions and issues. The Desktop Technician Intern will also participate in projects related to system-wide rollouts and updates when required.Essential Duties and Responsibilities: * Provides support and troubleshooting for hardware and software. Also performs installation and configuration of computers, printers, monitors, peripherals and software applications.
  • Completes helpdesk tasks as assigned to keep technical hardware and software properly installed and maintained;
  • Works with customers to ensure systems are working properly and technical assistance is available where needed for troubleshooting, support, and training.
  • Tests new and existing hardware and software to ensure adequate performance;
  • Deploys new assets as required to keep lifecycle equipment on schedule, as assigned;
  • Maintains technical documentation for the computer systems, including instructions and support files, to ensure proper install and maintenance of systems;
  • Maintains and updates fixed asset inventory for the helpdesk system.
  • Communicates courteously and professionally and maintains working relationships with others in carrying out job functions.
  • Frequently interacts with others in the organization as a function of providing support.
  • Provides technical instruction to customers and follows-up as needed.
  • Performs all job duties in compliance with safety guidelines and with an ongoing awareness of safety practices.
  • Knows and follows department and city rules as well as sound work and safety practices in order to accomplish the job objectives and avoid injury or loss;
  • Wears proper protective equipment when policy requires or conditions indicate a need and also utilizes proper body mechanics and ergonomics while performing work;
  • When potentially unsafe conditions are observed it is reported immediately for correction by the appropriate staff.
  • Performs other duties and activities as assigned.
Minimum QualificationsThe job requires some education in a Computer Science or related technical field to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. A valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility is also required.Knowledge, skills, and ability include:
  • Knowledge of help desk practices and environment of completing computer related tasks;
  • Knowledge of computer hardware, software, printers and peripherals.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Windows 10 and 11 OS;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications - Word, Excel and Access - sufficient to provide advice and guidance on technical questions;
  • Skill in computer hardware installation, maintenance and troubleshooting;
  • Skill in computer software installation, maintenance and troubleshooting;
  • Skill in communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, and others, sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
  • Provides a high level of Customer Service.
Physical DemandsThis job is performed in a normal office environment. Frequent travel to remote locations is required. Activities the incumbent must perform include digital dexterity, talking, hearing/listening, seeing/observing and using repetitive motions.Medium Work: This job is rated for Medium Work, meaning that the incumbent must be able to exert up to 60 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.Some requirements in this job description may exclude individuals who pose a direct threat or significant risk to the health and safety of themselves or other employees.
