Applications are invited for the above full time post for this 660 bed acute hospital serving a local population of approximately 400,000. This appointment will be made in accordance with the Consultant Terms and Conditions of Service for Hospital Medical and Dental Staff (England) 2003The main responsibilities of the Locum Consultant will be as follows:
  • Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the care of all patients presenting to the hospital
  • To share with colleagues the management of Obstetric and Gynaecological patients requiring admission
  • To undertake duties as defined within agreed job plan
  • Teaching and training of intermediate grade and junior medical staff, nursing staff and medical students
  • To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning clinical governance and audit
  • To have responsibility for and actively participate in continuing professional development (CPD)
  • To participate in on-call rota providing specialist and timely advice
Main duties of the jobThis post will be part of a friendly, dynamic and enthusiastic team of 25Consultantsdelivering safe and effective care for obstetrics and gynaecology patients from Bedfordshire and Luton. Multidisciplinary working is a key component of the role within the Trust and as part of the Gynaecology MDT covering South Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire.The appointee will be based at Luton & Dunstable University Hospital, participate in the on-call rota andrun theatre sessions. The appointee will be encouraged and supported in developing their specialty interests and support the service, within the overall job plan and to improve the pathway for obstetrics and gynaecology patients particularly the emergency Gynaecology pathway.The post holder will be expected to significantly contribute to the acute Gynaecology consultant service and the Consultant delivery suite Rota.   • Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within six months of award of CCT or equivalent (CESR) by date of interview
Registration
Essential
  • Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice at the time of application
  • Specialist Registration in Obstetrics & Gynaecology or eligibility to enter it within 6 months from the time of the interview
Qualifications
Essential
  • MBBS or equivalent qualification
  • MRCOG or equivalent
  • ATSM in Early pregnancy
Desirable
  • A post graduate qualification MSc, MD, PhD, MA or Masters in Education or related discipline
  • ATSM in Gynaecology ambulatory care or equivalent
Clinical Experience
Essential
  • Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience in early pregnancy care and ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems.
  • Able to take full and independent responsibility for delivering a service without direct supervision
  • Experience in Emergency Gynaecology pathway management
  • Obstetrics & Gynaecological Surgery including minimal access surgery
Desirable
  • Other ATSMs including: ATSM in Labour ward
  • Evidence of subspecialty training or fellowship out of region
  • Evidence of experience in advanced minimal access surgery in oncology
Clinical Governance/Audit/Research
Essential
  • Able to demonstrate a broad understanding of the principles and elements of clinical governance.
  • Knowledge of the principles of clinical audit and direct experience of audit.
  • An interest which improves the Obstetrics and Gynaecology pathway in all aspects
  • Knowledge of the principles of research and ability to interpret and appraise clinical research.
Desirable
  • Evidence of implementing relevant evidence based medicine
  • Implementation of evidence based guidelines
  • Participation in relevant national audits
Teaching
Essential
  • Knowledge and ability to teach all grades of trainees and medical students.
  • Completed a Teaching the Teachers or similar course
  • Understands learner centred teaching
  • Evidence of involvement in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
