Job Description:Do you want to help us create a safe and secure world through the delivery of transformational and trusted autonomous technologies? We seek to develop novel autonomous systems for a better world, working with the latest sensors, deploying our technology to advanced computing platforms, and experimenting with novel vehicles. Our team works closely with customers and users, ensuring we are solving real problems in a way that can be deployed in real situations. This means the systems we develop must be safe, reliable, and trustworthy. We are looking to grow our team with intelligent, talented, and motivated people to continue to deliver transformational technology. We are looking for a UAS Engineer with a background in UAS Prototyping, Autopilot Software and Flight Testing to join our Assured Autonomous Systems team. This is an exciting opportunity affording the successful applicant the chance to learn and apply UAS development skills across our developing products, supporting everything from high-level concept design and technology selection, through to implementation, and testing. While beneficial, expertise as a UAS developer engineer is not essential. Above all else we are looking for an able problem solver, an enthusiastic learner, and a team player who wishes to develop and apply their skills to a variety of interesting real-world problems. This is an opportunity to contribute as part of a complex multidisciplinary team working on projects that often culminate in tangible, real-world demonstrations out in the field: think bespoke autonomous drones conducting missions and demonstrations live in front of stakeholders, realised by the hardware and software developed by our team. For example, a typical project might see us use:· High-performance powertrain selection and integration into autonomous platforms to impact mission performance.· CAD and 3D printing to integrate new sensors.· PX4/Ardupilot log review to identify and resolve undesirable characteristics.· Testing of bespoke off-board autonomous functions using PX4 and ROS2.· Building prototype platforms to test and demonstrate to key stakeholders. This project would typically be realised by a small team of 5-10 engineers of varying disciplines and levels of experience, in short timeframes ranging from a few months to a year. We'd love to hear about the skills you have experience in or wish to develop further, and in return explain how those skills are used on our current projects - why not ask us more in your interview.Day to day, the role will include:
  • Enabling the development and testing of UAS technologies, with the support and guidance of more senior engineers, from concept and design through to deployment and maintenance.
  • Working as part of a team to implement backlog work items to realise our product and project aims.
  • Collaborating with other team members to develop and share good practice within the group.
  • Contributing to project teams, creating, and tailoring products to deliver real-world projects.
  • Embracing the UAS operating safety culture, contributing to the continuous improvement of safety in our systems.
  • Capturing and evaluating flight log data to identify areas for improvement.
  • The opportunity to influence our tech-stack: we have the flexibility to try new technologies and approaches if we believe they will add value.
Requirements:Skills, Qualifications and Experience required:
  • BEng or MEng degree in Aerospace Systems, Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or related engineering field.
  • 3+ years of experience working in UAS development.
  • Good skillset in CAD (primarily SolidWorks) and rapid prototyping.
  • Good understanding of UAS grade avionics and subsystems.
  • UAS assembly skills, including soldering.
  • Experience with PX4/Ardupilot development and debugging tools.
  • Experience in formal flight testing procedures.
The following areas would help you stand out:
  • Familiarisation with UAS regulatory domain.
  • AS pilot experience, GVC qualified.
  • Experience tuning PX4 flight controllers.
  • Proficient in UAS with offboard/autonomous features.
  • Familiarity with UAS grade communication systems.
To succeed in this role, you should offer the following:
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Appreciation of systems engineering processes and procedures.
  • A willingness and an enthusiasm to learn new skills, and the autonomy to do so without excessive supervision.
  • Experience of, or a desire to, work as part of a team to deliver complex or multi-disciplinary projects, products, or systems.
  • Enthusiasm to take ownership of technical problems and contribute to our shared learning environment.
  • Willingness to travel across the UK and internationally to support UAS testing and demonstration, sometimes even at short notice.
Benefits:We provide our people with an excellent benefits package that comprises:
  • Happy To Talk Flexible Working
  • Competitive salary: (£50,000 - £75,000)
  • 25 days' holiday entitlement
