SummaryReporting to the Manager, Assurance & Advisory (A&A), the primary responsibility of the Senior Advisor, Assurance is to lead and contribute to delivering risk-based assurance and advisory engagements of Teck's operations, development projects, and corporate functions around the world. The A&A team aspires to be recognized internally as trusted advisors while protecting and bringing value through delivery of integrated risk-focused independent and objective assurance.The Senior Advisor will gain exposure across Teck's operations and supporting business functions globally, as we work with various customers to drive and promote positive change and improvements with respect to risk management, governance and compliance through our actionable insights.This is a hybrid role based in Vancouver, Canada with some travel to other offices and remote locations 5-25% of the time in Canada, USA, Chile and Peru.Please note there are two openings.Responsibilities
  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures.
  • Support the Manager, A&A with delivery of the annual Internal Controls Over Financial Reporting (ICFR) audit including: planning, mobilizing resources, preparation of audit work papers, lead internal and co-sourced team members, perform peer quality assurance reviews, collaborate with internal and external customers (such as external auditors), report results.
  • Lead or support the planning, execution and reporting of other assurance and advisory engagements, strategic reviews or other special projects pertaining to mining operations and supporting functions such as Finance, IT, Legal, Sustainability and HR. This includes conducting risk assessments, preparing work programs and procedures, performing fieldwork and preparing and communicating results with customers in accordance with internal quality assurance standards and the Global Internal Audit Standards.
  • Assist management with the identification and assessment of risks and controls, or process improvements to achieve organizational objectives.
  • Document, communicate, and present observations, issues, and improvement opportunities related to engagements with customers at various levels within the organization
  • Collaboratively develop pragmatic recommendations that will strengthen the overall systems of internal control and assist in improving the efficiency, effectiveness, business performance and likelihood of achieving the strategic objectives.
  • Following-up with management to ensure agreed management actions have been properly implemented.
  • Prepare engagement time and expense budgets, monitor progress, lead and coordinate engagement teams, and monitor and collaborate with consultants or subject matter authorities.
  • Leading or supporting the design and implementation of pivotal initiatives that help A&A deliver its services with focus, rigour and impact, such as enhancing data analytics capabilities in the team.
  • Assisting A&A leadership team with ad-hoc audits and investigations, and leading strategic continuous improvement initiatives as assigned.
  • Continuously develop an understanding of Teck's operations, functions, and key development projects, as well as commodities and the metals mining industry more generally.
Qualifications
  • Strong command of risk management, internal controls and practical ethical decision making is needed
  • Experienced with delivering audits of compliance controls with Sarbanes Oxley Act (SOX) or similar compliance experience is a must
  • CPA or equivalent risk-assurance experience is required
  • CISA or CIA is preferred, but not required. Familiarity with internal control frameworks (ISO, COSO, SOC2 and COBIT) is desirable
  • Able to travel up to 25% to Canada, USA, Chile and Peru. May be required to work at high altitude (with requisite Altitude Physical Assessment)
  • Valid driver's license required
  • Business level fluency in both English and Spanish is required

  • Negotiation & Influence: Ability to collaborate and influence team members, internal/external customers with various backgrounds and at different levels in the organization to achieve outcomes that align with strategic direction is a must
  • General Business Acumen: Understands and interprets financial and business data to identify key business drivers that influence performance; uses this acumen to both identify and drive business-process continuous improvement
  • Technology Knowledge: Able to understand Teck's IT landscape and the governance, risk, and controls best practices is beneficial
  • Data Fluency & Analytics: Able to read, explore, analyze, interpret and communicate data to draw insights to influence decision making, including PowerBI experience, considered an asset
  • Mining or extractive industry experience and related risks is an advantage
