Job Description:job Title: Protection and Control Specialist - Oil & GasJob Summary: The Protection and Control Specialist in the Oil & Gas sector is responsible for overseeing the implementation and maintenance of protection and control systems to ensure the safe and reliable operation of critical assets such as pipelines, refineries, and processing plants. This role involves designing, testing, and troubleshooting protection schemes, as well as collaborating with engineering and operations teams to optimize system performance and reliability.Key Responsibilities: * Protection System Design: Design protection and control systems for critical assets, including relay protection schemes, breaker control circuits, and SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems. Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Testing and Commissioning: Conduct testing and commissioning activities for protection and control equipment and systems. Perform functional tests, relay testing, and system integration tests to verify proper operation and performance.
  • Fault Analysis and Troubleshooting: Analyze system faults and disturbances to identify root causes and develop solutions. Troubleshoot protection relays, control systems, and communication networks to restore normal operation and prevent recurrence.
  • Configuration Management: Manage configuration changes to protection and control systems, including device settings, logic programming, and network configurations. Maintain accurate documentation and records of configuration changes.
  • System Optimization: Collaborate with engineering and operations teams to optimize protection and control system performance. Identify opportunities for system improvements, reliability enhancements, and cost savings.
  • Cybersecurity Compliance: Implement cybersecurity measures to protect protection and control systems from cyber threats and vulnerabilities. Follow industry best practices and standards for cybersecurity in critical infrastructure environments.
  • Training and Knowledge Transfer: Provide training and support to operations and maintenance personnel on the operation and maintenance of protection and control systems. Transfer knowledge of system design, configuration, and troubleshooting techniques to ensure competency and proficiency among staff.
  • Emergency Response and Contingency Planning: Develop and implement contingency plans and emergency response procedures for protection and control systems. Coordinate with emergency response teams and regulatory agencies to mitigate risks and ensure timely response to incidents.
Qualifications and Skills:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or a related field. Advanced degree or professional certification is a plus.
  • Extensive experience in protection and control system design, testing, and troubleshooting, preferably in the Oil & Gas industry.
  • Strong knowledge of protection relay principles, relay coordination, and fault analysis techniques.
  • Proficiency in relay testing software and equipment, such as Doble, Omicron, or Megger.
  • Familiarity with SCADA systems, PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) programming, and communication protocols (e.g., IEC 61850, Modbus, DNP3).
  • Understanding of cybersecurity principles and best practices for protecting critical infrastructure systems.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to quality, safety, and regulatory compliance.
  • Willingness to travel to field sites and work occasional overtime or on-call shifts as needed.
