(employee will be working with or have access to children or vulnerable adults and requires a Criminal Record Check)Required for Professional RegistrationJob DescriptionIn accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority, patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at VIHA; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.Reporting to the Clinical Coordinator, the Registered Nurse works between the Acute Care Unit and the Emergency Department as required; provides professional nursing care to patients as a member of a multidisciplinary team; is responsible and accountable for coordinating and administering direct patient care utilizing the nursing process; provides direction to staff and volunteers; and responds to emergency situations to safeguard patients, visitors and staff in accordance with the unit/program philosophy, competency guidelines, policies, and the BC College of Nurses and Midwives professional and practice standards..QUALIFICATIONS:Education, Training And ExperienceCurrent practicing registration with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives. Advanced preparation in emergency and/or obstetrics specialty training. Two (2) years' recent related experience in medical/surgical, obstetrics, emergency/urgent care, neonatal resuscitation, emergency pediatrics or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required.Skills And Abilities
  • Ability to apply the nursing process effectively in a well-organized manner to the care of assigned patients.
  • Ability to physically perform the duties of the position.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal effectively with a variety of internal and external contacts including co-workers, physicians, community agencies, representatives, patients/clients/residents and families.
  • Ability to remain calm and to act appropriately in stressful and emergency situations.
