The Research Fellow will work with a team of geochemists, hydrologists and geophysicists in the Centre for Water in the Minerals Industry, School of Civil Engineering and School of Earth and Environmental Sciences. The Research Fellow will also collaborate with project industry partners, and international research partners in Canada and France.Key responsibilities include: * Research
  • Develop and apply conceptual and numerical models of waste rock dump hydrology and geochemistry.
  • Contribute to design and implementation of field monitoring (hydrological, chemical and geophysical monitoring), analysis of data and its use in models.
  • Occasionally travel from Brisbane to the field sites in other parts of Australia.
  • Communicate effectively with the project team including industry partners.
  • Producing high quality research outputs including publishing in leading relevant research journals, contributing to project reports and delivering presentations.
  • Integrate effectively with staff in the Centre for Water in the Minerals industry and the Sustainable Minerals Institute, providing disciplinary expertise to projects as required.
  • Contribute to the delivery of high-quality research and consultancy outputs to a range of clients including mining industry partners.
  • Supervision and Researcher Development
  • Contribute to supervision of Honour student and Higher Degree by Research students (as appropriate).
  • Demonstrates personal effectiveness in supervision and the management of researcher development.
  • Effective lead and develop supervisee performance and conduct by providing feedback, coaching, and professional development.
  • As appropriate, manage research support staff effectively in accordance with University policy and procedures.
  • Working to promptly resolve conflict and grievances when they arise in accordance with University policy and procedures.

This is a research focused position. Further information can be found by viewing UQ's .This is a full-time (100%), fixed-term position for up to 2.5 years.At Academic level A the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range AUD$77,324 - $102,945, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to AUD$90,470 - $120,445 annually. As these roles are covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases in line with the Enterprise Agreement.The greater of joining the UQ community are broad: from being part of a university, to recognition of prior service with other Australian universities, up to 26 weeks of paid parental leave, 17.5% annual leave loading, flexible working arrangements including hybrid on site/WFH options and flexible start/finish times, and genuine career progression opportunities via the academic promotions process.About You
  • PhD in engineering or environmental sciences that encompasses numerical modelling of physical systems.
  • Strong technical skills in numerical modelling, ideally including experience with hydrogeochemical and reactive transport modelling software such as PHREEQC, TOUGHREACT, MIN3D, Hydrus.
  • Experience of field monitoring, ideally including collecting water samples and installing water quality sensors.
  • Willingness to undertake field trips of periods of several days in Australia.
  • Track record of publishing in high quality scientific journals as lead author.
  • Evidence of contributions towards successfully obtaining external research funding.
  • Some experience in meaningful internal service roles and contributions towards external activities
  • Demonstrated high-level interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
