This role is part of Northvolt's sodium ion team based in Västerås and Stockholm. By joining us, you will be a key player in developing the next generation of battery technology, an even more sustainable and competitive product and contribute to the global transition towards a clean and carbon-neutral energy future.About the jobYou will be the Material Engineer responsible for pushing forward the development of one component in the development of next-gen batteries using an advanced and sustainable chemistry. You will lead the development of either anode, cathode, electrolyte, separators, binders, conductives or mechanical components within the team for better cell performance, safety, and system integration. This role is located in a cross-functional, fast-paced and project-based environment and you will collaborate closely with the Cell Design and the Process team as well as supporting functions such as Supply Chain to ensure the availability of the best sodium ion materials for cell production.We aim to reinvent how a battery is designed and performs and thus we require an entrepreneurial spirit and innovative mindset to approach new problems which do not have a solution yet. You are expected to be very creative in finding solutions to push both yourself and your colleagues from various teams to ensure progress is made in the project. You need to be up to speed on constantly changing circumstances and evaluate proposed solutions from different stakeholders perspectives, making non-biased decisions that are the most beneficial overall.About the teamYou will join a fairly new effort and thus a small but dedicated team which will grow with the progress of this project. This role gives you the opportunity to be part of an exciting new project from the beginning and allows you to grow and take on additional responsibility fast. The team includes cell design engineers, material engineers, supply chain experts and technical project managers, however, this project requires cross-functional contribution across the entire organization which will be one of the main responsibilities of this role. In this position, you will join a passionate team that is driven by creating an even more sustainable product which will make a significant impact for Northvolt and the transition towards a greener future.Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Create research plans for materials, formulate, perform experiments, analyze data, present results
  • Drive material development initiatives assembling coin and pouch cells
  • Scout for new materials and suppliers
  • Technically review materials and their suppliers
  • Support in quality method development and risk assessments
  • File and review patent applications

  • A technical BSc/MSc/PhD degree in Chemistry, or similar
  • At least 3 years experience working on a material category for Li-ion or Na-ion, K-ion technology
  • Experience in analyzing materials
  • Excellent English written and oral skills
  • At least 2 years industrial experience from the development and testing of secondary batteries
  • Highly organized and result-driven
  • People-person and ability to build strong relationships
  • Ability to drive work independently and in a team environment to deliver results
  • Can-do attitude and “not afraid to get hands dirty”
Bonus points for:
  • Experience in chemical material synthesis, processing and testing
  • Experience in patent reviews and applications
  • Experience with new battery chemistries and designs
  • Experience from a multi-cultural environment
