- Set up and operate engine lathes, Bridgeport-style mills, drill presses, and assorted hand and power tools.
- Set up and operate CNC lathe and mill equipment.
- Modify and edit part programs as needed.
- Working from drawings, specifications, and verbal instructions, follow set-up procedures and operating sequences.
- Select tooling, attachments, spindle speeds, tool feed rates, workpiece securing methods, supports, etc.
- Position, align, and secure the workpiece on the bed of the machine.
- Clamp and support work securely using care to avoid distortion that may affect the finished dimension.
- Secure workpieces between centers or on face plates of turning machines or secure workpieces with proper fixturing for milling operations.
- Assemble tooling in holders, calibrate tool heads to orient tools and workpieces to reference points for operations using care to select proper settings to assure travel clearances and avoid tool deflection affecting dimensions and finishes.
- Adjust the machine during operation for rate and amount of cut to obtain the required finish and dimensional specifications.
- May grind or prescribe grind for special and standard tooling to compensate for material variations and cutting conditions.
- Other duties as assigned by the manager.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Must be able to read blueprints.
- Must have mechanical ability to use machining equipment and measuring instruments.
- Two years of vocational school preferred.
- Five years of continuous machine shop employment involving conventional and CNC machines.
- Specific knowledge of machining technology, mechanical principles, advanced shop mathematics, layout and precision measuring procedures, operating methods, tooling types and applications, and machining characteristics of materials normally acquired in 2-3 years of experience.
