- Reporting to the Design Manager, this role involves a broad range of detailed design responsibilities for the company’s entire service offering portfolio, including district heating systems and energy centres
- Taking concept designs and producing a fully detailed design for the projects team to install
- Conduct initial project conceptual work, site investigations and surveys, client meetings and input into project submissions and presentations
- You will be responsible for all elements of the mechanical design, including energy centre layout, boiler and pump sizing, pressurisation, expansion, water treatment, de-aeration / dirt separation, pipe sizing and flue design
- Familiarity with large-scale thermal generating plant such as large shell and tube boilers and CHP engines is desirable
- Knowledge of heat pump technology would be advantageous
- Responsible for Design Engineers of varying levels including allocation of work, reviewing and checking of documentation, along with ensuring all projects responsibilities are delivered on time and to programme
- Design of distributed energy schemes, energy centres, and DH networks up to the point of heat delivery
- Awareness of cost implications within design
- Assist with effectively dealing with design issues / risks and minimising their impact
- Ability to design systems in the form of calculations, equipment selection and process operation
- Liaising with external design consultants, customers and in-house project teams
- Compliance with CDM requirements and in-house design processes
- Ability to design systems in the form of schematics, calculations, equipment selection, detailed drawings and BMS control operating strategies
- Ensuring compliance with legislation and best practice with company procedures
- Assistance in specifying the mechanical aspects for tendering works
- The successful candidate will ideally be qualified at Degree level or similar (HNC / HND) in a relevant discipline (mechanical engineering, building services etc) and possess a minimum of 5 years’ industry design experience
- Good understanding of design principles including heating / cooling distribution, boiler / CHP systems, and with steam system design principles being advantageous but not essential
- Good understanding of current Building Regulations
- Possess at least 5 years’ experience within the related Energy Engineering and Decarbonisation sector, undertaking feasibility studies , HLA’s and IGP’s
- Demonstrable experience with RIBA Stages and ReFit
- Awareness of how PSDS and Salix works
- Experiencing delivering in-depth utility analysis for complex energy assets including load analysis and regression analysis
- A general interest and some knowledge in biomass, gasification, geothermal and other renewable technologies
- A familiarity of National Design Specifications (NES/NBS) and competent in AutoCAD (2D)
- Experience of being an effective communicator, who is confident and focused, with the ability to manage your time and duties in a professional and effective manner
