We have a goal to half our embodied carbon of projects by 50% at this date too.We are recruiting for an Environmental Practitioner Degree Apprentice to join our friendly and innovative Bath Sustainability & Physics team, who are involved in a wide variety of challenging and exciting projects that are trying to reduce the impact of climate change.Why join Buro Happold as an Apprentice?Our management team include qualified professionals who learnt, developed and became qualified through the apprenticeship route. Many who decide to progress through the apprenticeship route find that working during the day on projects whilst attending part time study provides an invaluable experience and enables a work focused programme of learning delivering increased technical skills and behaviours that are invaluable for their career.Within your team you will be guided by your line manager and colleagues within a strong collaborative ethos that will enable you to develop your engineering understanding, knowledge and skills by working on a broad range of projects. There are also wider groups such as the Young Employees Forum (YEF) for those at an early stage of their career which provides a wider peer network across the many design, advisory and consulting disciplines that is Buro Happold. The YEF not only organises professional development events but has a wider focus on encouraging participation in voluntary activities and social events.Bristol UWE University will provide an excellent programme of study on a day-release format, meaning you will spend one day per week in class for 24 weeks per academic year. A typical taught week will include eight hours of contact with academics, and an additional 12 hours of study. The Environmental Practitioner Degree Apprenticeship not only meets all the core requirements of the accrediting body, but you will also learn from experts in environmental psychology, environmental planning and development, sustainability, and ecology, water and air management.For more information on this programme, follow this .Starting salary on offer is £24,500 plus additional benefits.What will I be doing?
  • You will embrace the latest sustainable & social value thinking to enhance our sustainability and social value offer on projects and with clients. Sustainable design and social value is the top of our corporate agenda.
  • Ensure the sustainable service and project work are carried out to an excellent standard - within agreed deadlines and within budget.
  • Apply sustainable assessment methodologies such as BREEAM & WELL to buildings and actively encourage their inclusion within building and master planning design.
  • Prepare sustainable specifications, design development reports and innovative design solutions.
  • Learn and develop skills in circular economy, embodied carbon and climate resilience using software such as One Click LCA, circular buildings toolkit, to help provide insight and help design sustainable buildings.
  • Represent the company as part of a team by attending design team meetings or meetings with clients and architects
  • Have opportunity to learn from the cities team to explore how we can achieve greater more informed sustainable design in regards to waste, ecology, air quality on our developments and masterplans.
  • Help support our social value, climate resilience and general sustainability work on projects and masterplans.

  • A positive and inquisitive approach and the confidence to ask and respond to challenging questions
Desired qualifications:
  • Tariff points: 104
  • GCSE: GCSE: Grade C/4 or above in English and Mathematics, or equivalent (we accept Functional Skills Level 2 in English and Maths).
  • A-level subjects: Points from A-level General Studies and AS-level subjects (not taken onto full A-level) can be included towards overall tariff. You must have a minimum of two A-levels. No specific subjects required.
