Job SummaryUnder the general direction of the Assistant Supervisor-Establishment Unit and the Staff Attorney, interviews parties involved in court cases to gain information for pending litigation concerning paternity and child support. Locates and serves parties with summons and subpoenas.Primary Duties & Responsibilities
  • Locates local defendants and serves summons and/or subpoenas on the individuals. Locates out of area defendants and secures a public or private agency for service of process and investigation.
  • Reviews public and private documents and online resources concerning parties involved in litigation to determine location, income, incarceration history, or other relevant information/data.
  • Coordinates investigations of defendants with federal, state, county, and local police agencies.
  • Gathers physical evidence for court preparation and presentation.
  • Supervises the scheduling and implementation of court ordered DNA tests in paternity cases.
  • Prepares legal documents as required
Other Duties & Responsibilities
  • Offers testimony as needed for court hearings on cases.
  • Represents and acts as an official spokesperson for the courts within the parameters of the job.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • The job requires knowledge normally acquired through the completion of a bachelor's degree in criminal justice or sociology. Candidate must have valid Michigan operator's license, concealed weapons permit, and be proficient in self-defense skills.
  • Four to six years of investigative experience. Law enforcement experience preferred.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with county personnel and the public in situations requiring tact and patience. Must interact with others in professional manner.
  • Computer skills necessary to use word processing, database, and various state software programs.
  • Ability to handle simultaneous projects requiring concentration and attention to detail with frequent distractions due to in-person interruptions and other communication. Frequently required to handle pressures related to meeting deadlines, fulfilling scheduling requirements, public concerns, and needs of coworkers.

  • Work includes periodic outside working conditions with exposure to extreme hot or cold
  • weather conditions. Work includes frequent exposure to noise.
  • Periodic exposure to threat of bodily injury.
  • Frequent travel between county locations is required.
  • Intermittent or cyclical work pressures are periodically experienced.
  • Extended workdays (beyond eight hours per day) are occasionally required.
  • On-call available to handle work problems, attend meetings, handle emergencies/crisis
  • situations, etc. beyond the normal workday is occasionally required.
