They may work directly with companies that want to sell their products in other countries, or they may work with government agencies to ensure that all applicable regulations are being followed. Export specialists must be well versed in international trade laws and customs procedures. They also need to have a strong understanding of the markets theyre working withboth the market where the product is being sold as well as the market where its being sourced from. This allows them to help companies make informed decisions about which products to sell where, how best to price those products, etc. Export Specialist Job Duties Export specialists have a wide range of responsibilities, which can include: Coordinating with customs brokers to ensure that paperwork is handled correctly, including filing forms with federal agencies such as the Bureau of Customs and Border Protection or the Internal Revenue Service Preparing bills of lading and commercial invoices Preparing international shipping documents such as bills of lading, packing lists, insurance certificates, and invoices Keeping track of shipments to ensure that they arrive on time at their destination Negotiating settlement of customs duties, taxes, and fines with government officials on behalf of the importer Coordinating with other departments within the company to ensure that import/export documentation is completed properly Helping companies identify new markets and customers for their products, services, or technologies in foreign countries Communicating with foreign customs agencies to arrange for inspections, clearances, and delivery of shipments to their final destination Coordinating with brokers, freight forwarders, and other third parties to arrange shipments of goods between countries
