This position is only available for UWE Students on the courses or modules mentioned below.About this roleThe College of Health, Science and Society is seeking to appoint a temporary, part-time Research Assistant to conduct research as part of a UWE Vice Chancellor’s Early Career Researcher scheme project (Exploring student experiences and perceptions of safety and ‘unsafe’ spaces in Bristol, and understanding the impact on students’ lives). This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to research exploring student safety in and around the Bristol area. The project aims to explore student experiences and perceptions of safety in and around the Bristol area, and to understand the characteristics of unsafe spaces and the impact on students’ lives.This Research Assistant post presents a truly exciting opportunity for an exceptional and motivated individual to make a significant contribution to student and community safety within Bristol. You will work in close collaboration with the research team to support the project across the various stages of the research process.The successful candidate will work alongside Dr Nick Addis (Senior Lecturer in Criminology), research project lead, and will be based within the Criminology subject group as part of the School of Social Sciences. Working in this team will provide the candidate with a first-rate opportunity to develop their skills in research methods, as well as building on their experience of working on applied criminological research within an academic setting. The main job responsibilities would be:
  • To conduct literature reviews around the topic of student safety and methods of measuring perceptions of safety, drawing on academic search engines to source appropriate literature;
  • To contribute to the drafting of academic research articles to submit for publication;
  • Analysing research data and conducting both quantitative and qualitative analysis using appropriate research software;
  • Presenting research to different audiences and engaging with other research dissemination activities, for example, conferences, or presentations to academic or industry partners;
  • Working collaboratively with the research team to establish research priorities, gather feedback, and support the research process.
About youThe post will suit someone who is currently enrolled on a Criminology degree (BA Criminology, BSc Criminology with Psychology, BSc Psychology with Criminology, BA Criminology and Sociology, BA Law and Criminology) at UWE Bristol. You will be comfortable and confident in conducting research, having completed either the ‘Nature and Use of Research’ or ‘Research Design and Analysis 2’ (for BSc Psychology with Criminology students) modules. You will be skilled in effectively analysing and interpreting research data, and comfortable in both quantitative and qualitative data analysis techniques, and the use of associated software, i.e., SPSS, NVivo. You will be skilled in conducting literature reviews and using academic search engines to source appropriate literature. You will be able to contribute to the writing up of research projects for publication, and will be experienced in the use of Microsoft Office applications; namely Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint. You will also possess highly effective communication skills to communicate research progress and outcomes, orally and in writing to colleagues and other supervisory groups, and at conferences, where appropriate. You can effectively manage your own workload and work well under your own initiative.
