Offer DescriptionThe structure you will be joining :Since January 2021, the TransVIHMI UMI has been under the auspices of the IRD, INSERM and the University of Montpellier. It has long been involved in a multidisciplinary approach to endemic and epidemic infectious diseases (HIV, tuberculosis, neglected tropical diseases), mainly in West and Central Africa and South-East Asia. The Ebola epidemic of 2014-16 in West Africa, then in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in 2018, led the unit to develop research projects on emerging diseases in Guinea, then in the DRC.In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the TransVHIMI research unit and the Institut National de Recherche Biomédicale (INRB, Kinshasa) benefit from a long-term partnership that has led to the signing of an agreement known as the Plateforme de Recherche Internationale en Santé Mondiale en République Démocratique du Congo (PRISME). The INRB and the TransVHIMI unit have been heavily involved in the development of fundamental and operational research in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Monkeypox and the Ebola epidemic, and the follow-up of people who recovered from Ebola virus disease. In the field of social sciences, the unit has recently obtained funding for several interdisciplinary research projects with major social science implications in the DRC, including: RESOH-LABO (AFD/EF), RESTOREID (Horizon 2020), the Junior Chair project (IRD/UM/ANR) ASAMCO (AFD).An attractive mission :Under the supervision of Almudena Mari Saez, anthropologist and researcher at IRD, the postdoc position is part of the RESTOREID project (Restoring ecosystems to stop the threat of (re)-Emerging Infectious Diseases, which focuses on landscape restoration.Given that the world is experiencing unprecedented biodiversity losses, current habitat restoration efforts are an opportune context to better understand the relationship between biodiversity change and disease emergence, and how to use that knowledge to improve restoration efforts, especially by minimizing spillover risk. RESTOREID aims to understand how landscape restoration can create “healthier” environment that mitigate the threat of the spread of zoonotic diseases. Within the RESTOREID project, we will focus on restoration actions in multi-use spaces, at the interface between humans and non-humans. These restored areas need to fulfil different roles, such as re-establishing populations of various species, but also taking account of social, economic and public health needs. Restoration is therefore conceived as a socio-ecological process that integrates various objectives, values, practices and knowledge. We aim to identify how the biodiversity of reservoirs and pathogens is influenced by restoration actions at both local and regional levels. The social science part of RESTOREID aims, among other things, to study the socio-cultural drivers of landscape use and how people perceive and value the non-human world; to understand the (temporal) interactions between people, animals and the environment in relation to restoration process and how this contributes to the perception of infectious risk.Your activities will include

  • Participating in the analysis of the data collected, exchanging with researchers from other disciplines and developing anthropological and interdisciplinary analyses where possible.
