Offer DescriptionThe aim of the AIR-FLOC project is to keep accurate measurements of different physical and geochemical variables characterizing the Antarctic Plateau surface through the facilities implemented at Concordia Station, e.g., surface downwelling and upwelling radiative fluxes, characteristic of the air-snow interface, snow precipitation and surface temperatures, as well as the isotopic composition of precipitation. These data are currently measured in the station by Italian and French personnel. In particular, Concordia station represents one of the few polar nodes of the Baseline Surface Radiation Network (BSRN) operating since Jan 2006 and providing surface measurements of broadband short-wave (solar) radiation components (global, direct, diffuse and reflected) and of thermal radiation (emitted by atmosphere and surface). Also, multiple weather data are collected here. While radiative fluxes represent an important input for both mass balance and regional climate models, to validate satellite radiometry and several other satellite observations, the weather data provide useful insights upon the climate in this remote location. At the same time, precipitation samples were also collected on a daily basis for subsequent analysis of the oxygen and hydrogen isotopic composition at the Ice cores, Isotopic and Environmental Geochemistry Labs of the Ca' Foscari University of Venice. Daily precipitation sampling for isotopic measurements has been continuously carried out at Dome C since 2008. Accumulation data are measured as well with several poles. These isotopic data are extremely important for paleoclimatology: assuming the empirical δ-T relationship is valid over time at a specific location, the isotope-temperature slope may be used to quantify past temperature changes based (the so-called “isotopic thermometer”). Following this approach, water stable-isotope geochemistry has been widely applied to polar paleoclimate research. Another useful application is related to the study of potential surface snow metamorphism. AIR-FLOC aims to support and enhance the data already collected at Concordia station by maintaining the continuity of this unique temporal series. All in all, Concordia station is the only station in Antarctica hosting this type of observations and sampling.RequirementsResearch Field Environmental science » Earth science Education Level Master Degree or equivalentResearch Field Geosciences » Geology Education Level Master Degree or equivalentResearch Field Environmental science » Other Education Level Master Degree or equivalentSkills/QualificationsThe interview aims to assess the candidates' skills and expertise on the following subjects:Variability of the isotopic composition of precipitation, with special emphasis on the polar regions.
