As an Engineering Design Manager, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. Babcock has started a series of major infrastructure projects at Devonport. Over the next 10 years Babcock will develop state of-the-art facilities to meet the evolving requirements of the UK's Royal Navy.Day-to-day, you'll be responsible for the facility design for spatial layout, boundaries, access, management of requirements, including co-ordination of verification and validation management processes. Contributor to the 'Design to operate' application (bringing the facility to life) through facility layout functionality and system designs into an overall facility operational concept to demonstrate functional capability.
- Responsible for integration of design across the proposed submarine facility. This includes management of requirements, interfaces, human factors, security, fire, emergency arrangements, facility level design deliverables and review activities.
- Co-ordinate the operational aspects of the system designs into an overall facility operational concept to demonstrate functional capability.
- Co-ordinate and design spatial layout and process management of facility by integration of the system designs into an overall facility layout.
- Ensure effective quality management arrangements operate and deliver through compliance with Babcock's business management system and technical manual.
- Ensure that the processes and activities being managed are appropriately documented with appropriate records, maintained, and configuration and quality controls applied.
- Demonstrate relevant knowledge and skills required in the technical management of complex design development throughout the design lifecycle, preferably within the submarine facility enterprise.
- Experience providing expert advice to the sub-contracted design houses to enable them to develop designs.
- Sound understanding of engineering design and safety practice as relevant to discipline, post and project requirements.
- Sound project specification, planning, project management and budgeting experience.
- Sound understanding of organisational and departmental procedures relating to design, health and safety, and quality requirements, and the ability to manage projects in accordance with these procedures.
- Experience of the design support to construction, operation, refit/repair of conventional and nuclear submarines and/or facilities.
- The candidate will be degree qualified in an appropriate STEM discipline (or relevant experience).
- Preferably Chartered Engineer, registered with Engineering Council.
