Our Finance function is undergoing a large-scale transformation to become a leading practice function with highly scalable, efficient processes, high standards of control and promoting improvements to performance management.This speciality role of Accounting Lead, Balance Sheet Control has been created to drive accuracy in the reporting of the SmartestEnergy Ltd (“SEL UK”) balance sheet, with a particular focus on establishing working capital reporting as part of monthly MI for senior management.How will I spend my time in this role?Month-End Reporting
  • Monthly pre-close review of material balance sheet accounts to ensure completeness and accuracy of reported balances;
  • Preparation of monthly/quarterly balance sheet reporting pack and cash flow statement, including management commentary;
  • Coordination of monthly balance sheet reconciliations process, identifying higher risk reconciliations to formalise as key controls, standardising templates, and evaluating potential automations;
  • Establishment of balance sheet reporting outputs from new ERP system (Workday).
Balance Sheet Insights (working closely with Commercial Finance)
  • Development of balance sheet KPIs (reported monthly as part of reporting pack);
  • Establishment of detailed working capital analysis to inform and drive better decision making by ExCo;
  • Responses to ad hoc requests for balance sheet insights;
  • Utilisation of tools, e.g. PowerBI for insight/analysis reporting dashboards.
Other
  • Clean-up of legacy balances in roll-forward accounts in preparation for migration to new general ledger system (Workday);
  • Drive programme of improvement in processes, reporting outputs and internal controls impacting balance sheet reporting;
  • Coordinate external audit testing of balance sheet accounts.
What skills/experience do I need to be successful?
  • Qualified accountant (ACA/ACCA/CIMA or equivalent) with post-qualification experience, either within industry or public accounting firm;
  • Experience of monthly financial close and reporting process, including managing balance sheet reconciliations and production of reporting packs;
  • Experience of reporting using analytical/insight tools (PowerBI experience desirable);
  • Experience of working capital analysis with metric outputs reported to management/Board;
  • Experience of driving continuous improvement in balance sheet analysis and reporting. (efficiency gains, use of new systems/tools, etc);
  • Financial accounting and reporting best practise, ideally within IFRS framework.
