Our success stems from our workforce culture bound by three core values: Compassion, Inclusion and Collaboration.Funded by the Federal Government of Canada under Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), CICS is recruiting candidates to fill the following summer youth employment position in our Scarborough location.Reference: Canada Summer Jobs 2024Job Title: Garden and Food Bank Assistant (2 positions)Summary of the Position:This position supports the Urban Farm Community Coordinator and Food Bank Worker in program activities and administrations of the Community Food Programs. This includes programs such as greenhouse, community garden plots, seed exchange, and the food bank. Community Food Programs provide culturally appropriate urban food gardening support and resources- seedlings, container growing kits, knowledge, volunteers, and networking opportunities for low income and marginalized adult, youth, and seniors living in Scarborough. Garden programs operate on a daily basis while the food bank operates one day per week. Some of the programs the candidate will be assisting in include: seed exchange, garden to kitchen workshops, pollination workshops, composting workshops, senior and youth garden volunteer club and the food bank. The programs run weekly garden club sessions and works with about 15 community groups that utilize the greenhouse and seed gardens. The program area will involve practical hands-on urban farming and food procurement work and in-person engagement with education programs.Tasks and Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the development of community education and engagement materials;
  • Take leadership in summer youth volunteer engagement activities - garden work, volunteer support, etc
  • Take leadership in the management of the composting system
  • Assist in harvesting, planting, and maintenance of the community garden and greenhouse
  • Assist in record keeping of food waste and harvest in the food bank and community garden
  • Perform administrative tasks such as documenting volunteers' registration, participation, co-facilitate group activities and assist in the daily hands-on maintenance and upkeep of program requirements
  • Assist in food procurement and assorting in the food bank which includes packing non-perishable hampers, quality check for fresh produce, and packing various protein foods.
  • Assist in outreach, planning and implementation for online/social media engagement and educational materials

  • Salary: $16.50 per hour
  • Hours of work: 30 hours per week

  • Anticipated Start Date / End Date: June 03 to August 2, 2024
