GNS offers a supportive, flexible work environment and professional career development.The RoleWe are seeking a mid-career to senior Engineering Geologist or Engineering Geomorphologist, with expertise in numerical modelling techniques, to undertake a range of research and consultancy projects relating to landscape and landslide processes, hazards and their associated risks. The appointment will be based at Lower Hutt, Wellington, New Zealand.You will have:
  • At least 5 years' experience working in engineering geological/geomorphological research and/or consulting roles.
  • Experience using numerical modelling approaches to solve slope stability or landslide-related problems.
  • Knowledge of slope stability concepts, landslide mechanics, and landslide processes.
  • Knowledge of the geotechnical properties of rocks and soils and methods for their engineering geological or geophysical mapping and investigation.
  • Previously worked in multi-disciplinary teams to deliver research and/or commercial projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a track-record of technical report writing and/or publishing in scientific literature.
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Flexible and adaptable team player.
  • Good time management and organisational skills.
In addition, the preferred candidate will have experience in one or more of the following:
  • Has led the design, execution, and dissemination of engineering geological/geomorphological research or consultancy projects.
  • Worked with remote sensing data and geospatial datasets to map landslides and related landforms.
  • Applied statistical analytical techniques and/or geo-spatial modelling to study slope stability and landslide processes for research or consultancy projects.
  • Experience in the organisation and execution of engineering geology/geomorphology fieldwork and proficiency with one or more relevant field skills, for example (but not limited to) geotechnical site investigation and mapping.
  • Undertaken laboratory experiments to measure the strength properties of rocks and soils to examine the failure mechanisms of landslides and rock slopes.
  • Have some experience of working with Iwi/Maori groups and organisations to build relationships with the aim of facilitating Maori development.
On top of the technical skills required, the successful candidate will need to work independently, apply initiative as well as take instruction from a range of staff: high levels of energy and drive and want to work for a changing and evolving organisation.This position is a permanent, full time (38 hours per week) role and will be based at our Avalon site in Lower Hutt, Wellington, but may involve New Zealand wide and international travel.The annual salary range for this position is between $95,200 to $179,343 (NZD) depending on the successful candidate's experience.BenefitsPeople come from all over the world to work for GNS Science.
