Description :REPORTING RELATIONSHIPSReports to: Microbiology/Pathology/Lab Safety ManagerGENERAL SUMMARYWorks under the supervision of the Microbiology/Pathology/Lab Safety Manager. The Lab Tech Assistant – Pathology's primary job function is to prepare and process pathology and cytology specimens for testing. The Lab Tech Assistant – Pathology also performs light transcription duties as necessary when locum pathologists are present. Performs other duties as assigned.QUALIFICATIONSEducation:
  • High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam Required
  • Basic Chemistry and Biology preferred
Licensure:Experience:
  • 2 years of Laboratory or related experience preferred
  • Medical Terminology preferred
Interpersonal Skills:
  • Must have excellent interpersonal relationship skills for working with other staff, physicians, patients and the public.
Essential Technical/Motor Skills:
  • Ability to operate computer input terminal. Finger and manual dexterity to manipulate slides and specimens.
Essential Physical Requirements:
  • Sits one to three hours per day typing, proofreading and filing. Stands/walks five to seven hours processing specimens and cover-slipping.
Essential Mental Requirements:
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision. Ability to adjust to fluctuations in schedule and meet established deadlines.
Essential Sensory Requirements:
  • Good vision required to operate computer.
Exposure to Hazards:
  • Exposure to fumes, toxins, biological specimens, chemicals, bio-hazardous material and needles in the laboratory environment.

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONSThe following is a summary of the major job duties of this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time.1. Distributes and files pathology reports.2. Distributes incoming mail3. Fills supply orders from doctors' offices.4. Prepares slides and blocks for send-out to physicians and reference laboratory.5. Accessions surgical and cytological specimens in the Pathology computer system.6. Assigns billing codes and number of blocks and slides to surgical and cytological specimens.7. Coverslips and labels slides.8. Answers telephone and processes requests for pathology reports.9. Prepares billing for the pathologists' professional billing company.10. Registers patients in the HIS as needed.11. Cleans and stocks supplies (formalin containers, etc.)12. Verifies patient identification.13. Prepares pathology accession logs and specimens for transport to other facilities.14. Prepares and labels cytology and histology samples/solutions for diagnostic testing.15. Transports specimens from surgery to the laboratory.16. May transcribe from dictation gross pathology and micro pathology reports, as needed for locum pathologist coverage.17. May proofread pathology reports, as needed for locum pathologist coverage.18.
