The Anesthesia Technician prepares equipment and work areas throughout the hospital for procedures requiring anesthesia. The Technician must be able to set-up, operate, and maintain monitoring and anesthesia equipment. The Technician is also responsible for stocking anesthesia supplies in carts at the point-of-care as well as in supply areas. He/she is expected to assist Anesthesiologists, Nurse Anesthetists, and Anesthesia Trainees during patient care. This individual serves as a role model and resource for Core Techs and resident staff.What you will do
- Maintains and organizes the anesthesia environment and supplies to facilitate departmental function.
- Prepares operating room and off-site locations for indicated procedures to include setting-up, calibrating, and insuring integrity of monitoring devices and setting-up airway equipment and intravenous fluids.
- Ensures that location of specialized equipment (e.g. ultrasound machines) is tracked and returned after use to a central location to be available for the next use.
- Consults operating room schedule and anesthesia team to determine equipment needs for all procedures. Able to troubleshoot as needed.
- Cleans, repairs and performs routine preventive maintenance on anesthesia machines, cables, carts, blood warmers, heating blankets and units, IV poles, etc. Consults with Biomedical as needed.
- Maintains the cleanliness and organization of the anesthesia workroom and all anesthesia work stations on a daily basis. Maintains supply stock in workrooms and all anesthesia work stations in rotational fashion.
- Ensures operating rooms and workrooms have appropriate stock of medications as well as disposable and durable anesthesia equipment.
- Performs quality control procedures on point of service laboratory testing in the OR and interprets results.
- Ensures proper functioning and integrity of anesthesia equipment.
- Provides first-level troubleshooting of anesthesia information system.
- Applies principles of asepsis in a knowledgeable manner.
- Adheres to JCAHO & OSHA Standards. Familiar with Department of Anesthesia and OR Policies and Procedures.
- Participates in orientation and training of new personnel to the department.
- Provides job specific guidance, mentoring, and coaching to Perioperative Core Technicians.
- Provides technical support to anesthesia professional staff for delivery of patient care.
- Positions patients on heating and cooling mattresses and adjusts in accordance with instructions; attaches mattresses to hypothermia machine and regulates proper temperature.
- Assists anesthesia providers with patient inductions or regional anesthetics.
- Assists anesthesia providers in inserting arterial and central venous catheters, attaches to transducers, and flushes with saline solution.
- Assists anesthesia providers in the preparation of intravenous drips of medications such as cardiotonic drugs for insertion into infusion apparatus; sets-up blood and crystalloids with appropriate filters, sets-up pumping devices preparatory to infusion as instructed.
- Sets up and attaches blood warmers, blood pumping apparatus, and infusion devices.
- Follows clinical lab protocols/standards for handling specimens and blood.
- Provides transport of specimens to and from appropriate clinical laboratory, if necessary.
- Provides transport of supplies from blood bank.
- Assists anesthesia care team in transport of critically ill patients.
- Provides transport of equipment and medications to and from pharmacy, OR, and other anesthetizing locations.
- High School Diploma / GED Required
- Associate's Degree in one of the health sciences Preferred
- At least three (3) years in an OR setting or equivalent technical experience in a health-related field Preferred
- Understanding of proper methods for handling and storing blood products.
- Ability to identify emergency situations and use sound judgment in instituting established procedures. Ability to remain calm and work in an efficient manner during emergencies.
- Ability to communicate clearly in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to prioritize and organize tasks according to Unit's needs.
- Ability to establish and maintain good interpersonal relationships.
- Good organizational skills.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) - issued through on organization that requires a hands-on instructor lead psychomotor skills verification (ex. American Heart Association or Red Cross). - upon hire - Required
