Job Description:PURPOSEOn-site/hybrid in Chattanooga, TNThe Systems Engineer supports EPB Fiber Optics network operations in a multidisciplinary team of engineers in networking, system administration, telecommunications, and video. Primary responsibilities involve Linux system administration and programming using Javascript, Perl, PHP, and other languages.DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead projects with minimal supervision, displaying strong follow-through and initiative.
  • Design and develop complex systems, including hardware, software, and networks while ensuring that they are reliable, scalable, and secure
  • Automate manual processes using scripting languages such as PHP, Perl, Javascript, etc.
  • May create and support programs to interface with APIs for various applications, MYSQL databases, and other systems as needed.
  • Design, implement, and manage EPB's residential and commercial broadband services.
  • Ensure that different subsystems work together seamlessly by integrating hardware, software, and network components to create a cohesive system.
  • Direct and perform all necessary audits and maintenance activity to ensure service levels are sustained, and systems are optimized and not compromised.
  • Develop and maintain system documentation, including diagrams, Standard Operating Procedures, Test Plans, and work instructions.
  • Perform after-hours support duties within an on-call rotation to sustain networking systems and service levels - 24/7/365.
  • Coordinate projects with other departments and external organizations.
  • Develop and test new products, troubleshoot complex system issues, interpret work orders to program various systems, and resolve issues escalated to them from Tech Support, Field Services, and/or Network Operations.
  • Identify potential risks and develop strategies to mitigate them. Create disaster recovery plans and ensure that the system can recover quickly in case of a failure.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's Degree in a related technical field is preferred, or an equivalent of 4-6 years of experience in system/network administration and/or programming skills.
  • Experienced scripting/programming languages such as Perl, PHP, BASH, and Javascript, system administration for various servers, SQL queries, tables, and troubleshooting.
  • Strong knowledge of networking, switches, routers, firewalls, virtualization, and storage networks.
  • 4+ years working in a virtualized (VMware) Linux Server Environment with Linux server administration experience. (RedHat Preferred)
  • Event Management System administration experience.
  • Proven analytical and troubleshooting skills in a highly visible, fast-paced enterprise environment.
CERTIFICATION & OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Industry certifications related to specific technical areas are preferred. (ex: Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE), Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE), CompTIA Network+)
  • High creativity and motivation with demonstrated talent for identifying, scrutinizing, improving, and streamlining complex work processes.
  • Experience with SQL database queries and troubleshooting.
  • Detail-oriented with a critical degree of accuracy used to manage complex systems.
  • Ability to script your way out of mundane, repetitive tasks; Ansible, Perl, Python, etc.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, verbal, presentation, and time management skills.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
  • The work environment typically represents a standard office setting.
  • Fast-paced and heavy workload to be expected and must continually meet deadlines. Will be required to sit, type, communicate, walk, and long hours.
  • After-hours and weekends will be needed for emergencies, maintenance activities, and on-call will also be required.
