Job SummaryA. Introduction of the project:The GIZ project “Youth Employment in the Agri-Food Sector” (YEA) is implemented in Western Kenya in the Counties of Bungoma, Kakamega, Kisumu, Siaya and Vihiga. It has been commissioned by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) to create sustainable income and employment opportunities, especially for young people and women, in the agricultural and food sectors in West Kenya. It targets young farmers, owners of agriculture-based small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and their
employees. The primary focus is on individuals aged 18 to 35.The project aligns with Kenya's national policies to combat youth unemployment and supports
the country's development goals, including ending poverty, and hunger, promoting gender equality, sustainable economic growth, and addressing climate change. The project's approach entails collaboration with diverse stakeholders, including government entities, private sector associations, and civil society organisations.The project focuses on:1. Bolstering the capabilities of both public and private actors in implementing strategies for youth employment within the agricultural sector.2. Enhancing young farmers' access to essential services, resources, and markets, particularly focusing on sectors with significant potential and leveraging digital solutions.3. Nurturing the entrepreneurial skills of young individuals and startups within the agricultural and food sectors and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises as well as startups.4. Promoting the appeal of the agricultural and food sectors as contemporary, inclusive, and profitable avenues for income generation and employment opportunities for young people.Overall, the project seeks to create a sustainable and resilient agricultural and food sector in Kenya while empowering young people, particularly women, to participate and thrive in this vital sector.The YEA project employs the integrated employment approach jointly with the Kenya country project “Employment in rural areas with a focus on youth” (RYE) under the special initiative “Transformation of Agricultural and Food Systems of the German Federal Government. Both projects together are named Agri-Jobs 4 Youth.ResponsibilitiesB. ResponsibilitiesThe driver is responsible for
  • safely and responsibly performing all official travel using official vehicles
  • regularly servicing and looking after official vehicles
  • taking account of all available information on road conditions, accessible routes and locations
  • running official errands and
  • assisting with other office work
B. TasksThe driver performs the following tasks:1. DrivingThe driver
  • provides passenger transport in an official
car for project staff, official visitors and guests * runs errands for the project, e.g. sendingletters and messages, paying bills and buying smaller quantities of office
supplies * helps with transporting goods
  • completes the vehicle log correctly and
conscientiously in accordance with GIZ standards2. ServiceThe driver
  • cleans the interior and exterior of the vehicle(s) regularly
  • checks oil, water, brakes and brake liquid, tyre pressure, battery levels and the entire vehicle, monthly or every 5,000 km (whichever is first), headlights, brakes, bodywork for dents etc.
  • is responsible for the project vehicle documents and their good condition, keeping a vehicle log and recording monthly maintenance
  • calculates monthly petrol, oil and lubricant consumption
  • reports need for service and carries out minor repairs
  • immediatelyreports all involvement of the project or office vehicle in accidents, including minor accidents, damage, loss or theft of vehicle fittings
3. Knowledge managementThe driver
  • uses all available information (including current radio news on traffic conditions) to update daily knowledge of road conditions, current passable routes and locations, and shares this
information with other people in the office and other drivers * proactively seeks guidance on security conditions prior to field trips in coordination with project Admin Unit4. Other duties/additional tasksThe driver
  • assists other colleagues as needed in the project, programme or office if there is no travel pending, carries out other office work on request
C. Required qualifications, competencies, and experience.QualificationsCompleted a secondary school education and/or any other relevant academic qualification.Holds a valid driver’s license.Advanced and/or Defensive driving certificate will be an advantage.VHF Radio communication will be an advantage.Professional experienceAt least 5-8 years’ work experience as a driver.No major accidents in the past 3 years.First Aid & Emergency training.Other knowledge, additional competencesgood knowledge of the English language and very good knowledge of Swahili.discipline, punctuality, resilience, patiencefamiliarity with all project areas in Western Kenya (five counties: Bungoma, Kakamega, Siaya, Vihiga and Kisumu)appropriate appearance and attire, friendly manner with all passengers.willingness to upskill as required by the tasks to be performed – corresponding measures are agreed with management.D.
