about the roleYou rôle is to work on the subject : " Implementation of a secure observability solution for cloud-native network functions, capable of effectively detecting threats. "Global context and problematicThe deployment of 5G on cloud-native infrastructures introduces additional constraints on the virtualization layer and more precisely in term of flexibility, scalability and performance.Make network functions cloud-natives requires the adoption of Open source solutions developed within open-source communities as CNCF(Cloud Native Computing Foundation) and LFN (Linux Foundation Networking). They define quite precisely the concept of observability with its three main components: monitoring, logging and tracing. Open source projects with different maturity levels deal with these topics and propose some tools. The postdoc takes place in this context, in relationship with the implementation of an observability solution adapted to the needs of the telecom service providers. The postdoc will integrate a multidisciplinary team built around a strategic project for Orange (large scale European project IPCEI) whose mission is to industrialize a reference observability solution for European operators. The postdoc will be responsible for proposing new approaches to enhance the existing observability solution, with a focus on security. Objective and technical locks
The objective of the postdoc is to study the security issues related to the implementation of observability solution for traffic between cloud-native network functions. To achieve this, they will rely on projects from the CNCF ecosystem to understand the best security practices. The postdoc will then propose new approaches to enhance the existing observability solution, with a particular focus on security.Locks and stakes1. Hardening and operational deployment of an observability solution for cloud native network functions.2. Improvement of the existing observability solution by integrating the collection of additional telemetry data to enhance the detection of security threats.3. Proposition of a solution for detection of anomalies related to security, based on observability data.about youCompetences (scientific and technical) and interpersonal skillso PhD in systems and networks (virtualisation, OS) or IT Systemso Kubernetes, CNCF eco-systemo Coding (Linux)o Security (protocoles, encryption)o Team work in cooperation with universities and companies outside Orange.o English, Frencho Writting and oral presentation skillsEducation levelPhD et MSC ou ingeniering school in networks & computer scienceExperience (trainings, …)o PhD in the domain of networks ans systems or IT systems.o Experience in software development and a proven interest for the subject.o At least one significant experience with a concrete result, a report and articles.o Knowledge of the open-source communities (CNCF, Kubernetes)additional informationFrom a general point of view, the thesis fits into the framework of an European-wide project IPCEI (Important Project of European Interest) dedicated to the telco cloud. Hereafter is what we intend to do on observability:
  • Build a team dedicated to observability in Orange Innovation
  • Capitalize on Open source (CNCF)
  • Security is key to observability and is essential for the proactive troubleshooting and the supervision of end-to-end telecom services.
