- Ensure the availability and consistent performance of our corporate applications
- Ensure all database servers are backed up in the way that meets the business's Recovery Point Objectives (RPO)
- Test backups to ensure we can meet the business' Recovery Time Objectives (RTO)
- As new systems are brought in-house, choose whether to use clustering, log shipping, mirroring, Windows Azure, or other technologies
- Troubleshoot SQL Server service outages as they occur, including after-hours and weekends.
- Implement industry standard and best practices
- Configure SQL Server monitoring utilities to minimize false alarms
- Install and configure new SQL Servers
- When performance issues arise, determine the most effective way to increase performance including hardware purchases, server configuration changes, or index/query changes
- Document the company's database environment
- Monitor database availability, report issues pro-actively and put in place necessary processes to mitigate risks
- Communicate with clients/vendors as required: inform/chase for incident progress, notify them of impending changes or agreed outages
- Fast turnaround of client requests
- Log and prioritize tickets
- Implement ITIL standards for maintaining the database landscape
- Improve user perception, and system stability
