Coding and Informatics services analyze patient health information and assign standardized codes to create structured data, which is then used internally for decision-making, performance measurement, quality improvement and externally for hospital funding, clinical research, and national benchmarking. Users who access this data include:
- Nationally by CIHI
- Provincially by BC Health Authorities
- Hospital sites key indicator report cards and score cards
- Physicians determining the complexity of patient populations
- Hospital Programs and clinicians for outcomes.
- Administration
- Senior leadership
- Committees
- Researchers
- Process corrections for abstracts for data quality.
- Maintain the computerized abstracting system.
- Participate in continuous quality improvement activities.
- Provide data related to specific projects and/or assignments as requested
- The salary and benefits for this position is in accordance with union wage grid – HSA.
- CHIMA annual fees for employees covered by the HSPBA collective agreement will be paid for by Health Information Management (HIM).

- Graduated from an approved Health Information Management Program.
- Canadian College of Health Information Management (CHIM) Certified and current active membership with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA).
- Demonstrated ability to code/abstract in the current CIHI and BC Ministry of Health standard classification system.
- Demonstrated knowledge of computerized coding and abstracting systems.
- Demonstrated knowledge of pathophysiology.
- Excellent ability to communicate verbally and in writing, work effectively with others, and interpersonal skills
