- Direct and perform microbiological analysis using standard testing protocols
- Perform general responsibilities in the laboratory to ensure best laboratory practices is maintained
- Individuals must be conversant with QA/QC, ISO 17025 requirements and Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Provide assistance to Lab Management in performing operations of the Microbiology Lab
- Assist with technical training and evaluation of competence
- Adherence to SOPs and laboratory test methods
- Adherence to lead times
- Manage workflow at workstation with (minimal roll-over testing to the following day).
- Minimal retests and internal non-conforming work (
- Ensure that activities are carried out and completed on or before the scheduled date.
- Complete required documentation of scheduled activities.
- Keep training record up to date at all times with all training activities completed.
- Complete competency evaluations per required schedule.
- Complete training evaluations per required due date.
- Provide supervision to new incumbents.
- Conduct OTJ training/re-training and continuous supervision of new staff once deemed competent.
- Ensure up to date knowledge of laboratory SOPs and verification documents required for accreditation.
- Ensure that all verifications required by the SOP’s are recorded appropriately.
- Use the current SOP versions for updated documents.
- Verify correct completion of documents and submit documents as per schedule.
- Assess and report any deviations to TS/ LM.
- Evaluate and assess QC according to specified limits.
- Record QCs as per SOP requirements.
- Report any deviations from quality control specifications immediately to the Laboratory Manager and/ Technical Signatory.
- Ensure deviations are actioned according to the QC procedure.
- Perform competence evaluation at least once per SANAS surveillance assessment period.
- Evaluate and report results.
- Ensure that all proficiency tests are completed before the submission date.
- Ensure sufficient stock levels in order to perform scheduled analysis before testing commences.
- Report any stock requirements to LM and TS.
- Advise of increased stock use in area.
- Conduct stock takes as required.
- Receive, label and pack stock away.
- Verify media prior to use according to laboratory procedures.
- Keep abreast of new technical innovations in industry.
- Assist with Method Validations and R&D initiatives.
- Feedback to TS/LM on any matters that may affect the functioning of the department.
- Practice regular handwashing.
- Complete cleaning schedules to maintain hygiene specifications.
- Liaise with lab management responsible for housekeeping as required.
- Practice ‘cleaning in place’ policy in the laboratory for areas and equipment.
- Inform management immediately of any customer queries or complaints received.
- Perform required analyses.
- Assist with thorough investigations of customer complaints in accordance with the SOP’s governing customer complaints. Feedback to be given to Laboratory Manager on outcome of complaint investigation.

- Matric
- BSc (Microbiology, Biotechnology, or equivalent)
- N. Dip. Biotechnology
- N. Dip. Food Science/Technology
- 0 – 3 Years experience in an ISO 17025 accredited facility
- Practical experience in an ISO 17025 laboratory is beneficial
- Detail orientated
