Offer DescriptionESTABLISHMENT STRATEGYThe use of wood in the construction of structures offers efficient alternatives for civil engineering. Beyond the technical qualities of the material, building with wood is a decisive solution to climate and environmental challenges. Wood is natural material from our forests, renewable, recyclable and biodegradable, with a strong capacity to store carbon throughout the life cycle of the structures. A significant change in regulations was recently adopted to quantify and reduce the major carbon footprint of the construction sector (RE2020). In the short term, this will lead to strong demand for wooden structure buildings across all civil engineering markets. At the University of Montpellier, the creation of the interdisciplinary master's degree in Wood Sciences at the Faculty of Sciences made it possible to highlight more than a hundred researchers and teacher-researchers on forest and wood themes within the University from Montpellier. The Institute of Technology of Nîmes and the Faculty of Sciences wish to amplify this dynamic by opening up more widely to the uses of wood and biosourced materials, particularly in construction. The University of Montpellier is supporting this transition, both in research and teaching, by offering a Junior Professor Chair position. The CPJ is attached for scientific research to the Laboratory of Mechanics and Civil Engineering (LMGC) and for teaching to the Faculty of Sciences and the IUT of Nîmes.HOST LABORATORY STRATEGYSince the 1980s, the Laboratory of Mechanics and Civil Engineering has been developing research in civil engineering on the one hand, and in tree and wood mechanics on the other hand. The laboratory is one of the pioneers in the design of tensegrity structures. It also benefits from international recognition in tree biomechanics and rheological properties of wood material with numerous outcomes, especially to wood sciences issues in the field of cultural heritage (strain monitoring of wood panels painted such as Mona Lisa at the Louvre museum since 2004 or Ste Trinity at Fabre museum in Montpellier since 2016, study of the use of wood in musical instrument making). For more than ten years, a new area of research has been developed, centred on the behaviour of wood in building with participation in large-scale projects both on a national scale (ANR EFEUR5 project, round wood construction in the Amazon environment, PEPS Project Green wood uses, scientific expertise of the DCE of the framework of Notre-Dame de Paris, etc.) and at the European level (COST Action CA20139 participation). The team developed tools for measuring long-term behaviours at different scales (from a few cm to a few meters) and different hygrothermal conditions. In addition, the resources of the IUT of Nîmes make it possible to test beams in real dimensions, elements of mixed wood/metal assemblies, hygrothermal performances of insulation materials, etc.The laboratory wants to strengthen these human and material resources on this theme to respond to the expected strong development of the wood sector and the necessary adaptations in the context of climate change.TEACHING PROJECTThe recruited person will work at both the IUT of Nîmes and the Faculty of Sciences. His/her teaching service is 64 hours / year over the duration of the chair contract. At the IUT he/she will work within the Civil Engineering Sustainable Construction department to strengthen the development of teaching in the different areas of wood construction. He/She will be required to participate in all of the courses of this BUT training, participating in the acquisition of numerous skills related to wood in construction, taking into account the specificities of the material and its life cycle, from start to its implementation on site, maintenance and deconstruction of the works. At the Faculty of Sciences, he/she will work within the newly created Master in Wood Sciences to support the existing teaching team and complement the interdisciplinarity of the team for the themes construction, structures, design and mechanics. He/She will be involved in supporting projects related to design and construction, monitoring internships and work-study programs.SCIENTIFIC PROJECTFrance has a great diversity of forests (2/3 hardwoods, 1/3 softwoods) whose use as timber for construction is a decisive economic outlet for the national timber industry. However, the mechanical behaviour of structural woods, both instantaneous and longterm, is currently defined by global fixed indicators based on a single dominant softwood species. It is necessary to better understand the diversity of mechanical performances of timber to increase the growth of emerging species through their forest availability or their classification quality. This knowledge of wood diversity is especially necessary since it is difficult to predict which species will survive climate change and what will be the future resource. We must have a more in-depth knowledge of the properties of wood used in structures, for all solid timber as well as processed solid wood products (glued laminated beams, cross-laminated timber (CLT)). Beyond wood products, the technical specifications of the works require a better description of the performance of the construction systems (structural, fire, acoustic, seismic, etc.) including these resources. The research project will aim to provide significant scientific advances in understanding the diversity of mechanical performances of timber as well as in the description of the rheological behaviour of timber for their use in structures. It will aim at increasing service qualities and performance of the works. The project will benefit from the strong resources and skills of the LMGC on both the experimental and numerical aspects.RESOURCES PROVIDED- 200K€ allocated by the ANR, among which 60% at least should be dedicated to payroll expenditure- As part of the research support policy of the University of Montpellier, aid of up to €100K may be provided by the I-SITE Excellence Program (PEI)These funds will be used to recruit a doctoral student and a post-doc for the project and to cover operating and mission costs.RequirementsResearch Field Engineering » Civil engineering Education Level PhD or equivalentResearch Field Engineering » Materials engineering Education Level PhD or equivalentResearch Field Engineering » Mechanical engineering Education Level PhD or equivalentLanguages FRENCHLanguages ENGLISHInternal Application form(s) neededFiche de poste IUT Nimes FDS - MIPS_LMGC_18-04-24_1.pdfEnglish(230.83 KB - PDF)Additional InformationSelection processCONDITIONS FOR APPLYINGSubmission of application on Galaxie website from 05/16/2024 to 08/28/2024 (any incomplete file at the deadline will be refused):File's preparation Deposit of the following documents on Galaxie website:
